Mary Susan Lannon, a dedicated geologist, educator and nature enthusiast, passed away peacefully on July 10, 2025. She was 64.
Mary was born on Dec. 11, 1960, in Ludington, Mich., to Thomas Richard Jr. and Mary Ann (Kulwicki) Lannon. A 1979 graduate of St. Joseph High School, she went on to earn a bachelor's degree in geology from Western Michigan University, followed by master's degree in geology from Southern Illinois University, and a second master's in hydrogeology from Western Michigan University.
On Oct. 2, 1992, Mary married Brad Kevin Patzer. Together, they shared 27 wonderful years before his passing. With a passion for science and education, Mary spent over two decades in the greater Grand Rapids area working as a geologist and hydrogeologist, as well as an inspiring instructor at Grand Rapids Community College. Her love for geology was contagious – she brought rocks to life for her students, sharing her enthusiasm and deep knowledge with joy and energy. Mary had a lifelong commitment to environmental preservation and was a proud supporter of Nature Conservancy. She also found great joy in raising black, chocolate and yellow Labrador retrievers.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Margaret "Meg" McAllister, and her beloved husband, Brad.
She is survived by her siblings: Tom (Jane) Lannon, Brian (Darlene) Lannon, Beth (Michael Cloud) Lannon-Cloud, Maureen (Steven Leuty) Lannon, Kevin (Catherine) Lannon; sister-in-law, Cindy Kaser; and her cherished nieces and nephews: Kestrel, Allison, Stuart, Jacob, Sam, Tyler, Adam, Wil, MaryBeth, Ian, Lindsey and Brandon.
Those wishing to honor Mary's memory are invited to contribute to The Nature Conservancy at preserve.nature.org, or by mail to Attn: Treasury, 4245 N. Fairfax Drive, Suite 100, Arlington, VA 22203 USA, or by phone at 800-628-6860.
In accordance with Mary's wishes, no formal services are planned. Arrangements are entrusted to Girrbach Funeral Home. Online condolences may be shared at www.girrbachfuneralhome.net.
