Mary Lou Cichon, of Crystal Lake, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday, May 28, 2025 at the age of 78.
She was born October 10, 1946 in Chicago, the daughter of the late Howard and Ruth (Kondilik) McElroy.
Mary Lou was a proud graduate of Alverno College in Milwaukee, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing. Her 44-year nursing career spanned a wide range of specialties, reflecting her deep dedication to the field.
A passionate and talented maker, Mary Lou started early with painting and sketching, then continued to create countless quilts, cross-stitch pieces, and knitted items. An exceptional seamstress, she generously shared her handmade creations with friends and family throughout her life.
Mary Lou also had a deep love of nature — she found joy in exploring national parks, watching birds, and identifying wildflowers. This appreciation for the natural world became a cherished part of family life, as she inspired her loved ones to notice and celebrate the beauty around them.
Mary Lou is survived by her loving husband of 51 ½ years, Ralph; her children, David (Karen) Cichon and Kate Cichon; and her grandchildren, Scott, Kayla and Rowan Cichon; along with a host of important friends and family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Phyllis Markovic.
