Mary Louisa Carter Primrose Hoffman, of Henrico, Virginia died November 6, 2024. She was loved and cherished by her family, friends, and caretakers.
Born in Baltimore, Maryland on December 31, 1936, she was daughter of the late William Hearne Primrose, and Alice Carter White Primrose. She was the wife of the late Reverend Harry Lee Hoffman, III. She is survived by her children, Alice Hoffman Middleton (Danny), William Ellicott Hoffman (Beth), and Charlotte Hoffman Van Duser (Tom Duggan), and a dear cousin, Lucy McKean. She was known as "Memaw" to her grandchildren Natalie Porch, Wesley Van Duser, Jennifer Carbone, Tyler Van Duser, and her great-grandchildren, Camden, Carter, Neve, and Gracyn.
Mary Louisa graduated from Roland Park Country School and Marjorie Webster Jr. College, with a degree in kindergarten education. She married Harry in 1958. As a lifelong Episcopalian with an exuberant personality, she enjoyed the advantages and challenges of being a rector's wife. She and Harry served parishes in Powell, Wyoming (St. John's), Richmond, Virginia (St. Matthew's), Purcellville, Virginia (St. Peter's) and Ellicott City, Maryland (St. John's). She loved to entertain, taught Sunday School, kindergarten and preschool, was a Girl Scout leader, a member of the garden club, and knitted many hats for the homeless.
She enjoyed vacationing at the Crater Club on Lake Champlain, where she was fondly known as the "Lob-Sta" on the tennis court. Mary Louisa spent the later years of her life at Fairhaven Retirement Community in Sykesville, Maryland, and at Chestnut Grove Senior Living in Henrico, Virginia. Though she suffered from dementia during her final years, she maintained a sense of cheerfulness and playfulness, and charmed all with whom she came in contact. We are certain that her joy became even more bountiful upon her arrival in heaven!
An intimate graveside service was held at the Ellicott Family Graveyard in Ellicott City, Maryland at 10 am on November 30, 2024. "Welcome Happy Morning, Age to Age Shall Say!"
