Mary E. Mass of Council Bluffs, passed away peacefully on October 10, 2025, while staying with family in Pella, Iowa. Mary was born in Council Bluffs on January 28, 1942 to Vera and Raymond Hostetter. She graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1960. She then married Harold Mass and started their family.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Harold, in 2017. Also preceding her in death is her father, Raymond Hostetter; her parents, Vera and Kenneth Miner; brothers, Eldon Hostetter and Dan Miner; sisters, Rosalie Davis and Lucy Stokes. Mary and Harold lost a precious granddaughter, Faith Elizabeth in 1981.
Mary is survived by her children, Lisa (Michael) Smith and Lana Schmidt of Omaha, NE, Julie (Dale) Good of Pella, IA, Jacque Reumund and Ian (Joann) Mass of Council Bluffs, Julianna Beam of Treynor. She is also survived by brothers, Doyle (Susan) Miner of Council Bluffs, Howard (Mary) Hostetter of Springfield, Minnesota, David (Jan) Miner of Portland, Oregon; and sister Colleen Miner of Manhattan, Kansas as well as many nieces and nephews. Mary was blessed with 13 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. Although Mary loved all her children, the grands and great-grands were her pride and joy and a huge part of her legacy.
Mary retired from the US Postal Service in Omaha. She loved baking, especially cakes as she learned professional skills from the Wilton School of Cake Decorating in 1985. She has baked many beautiful wedding and birthday cakes for her kids, family and friends.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 - 7:00 PM at Hoy-Kilnoski Funeral Home on Wednesday, October 15, 2025. Graveside services will be held on Thursday, October 16 at 1:00 p.m. at Walnut Hill Cemetery. Reverend Richard Blodgett is the officiant for her services. Hoy-Kilnoski Funeral Home was Mary's choice of provider. Memorials will be directed by the family.
