Mary Helen McGregor

Mrs. Mary Helen Whorton McGregor, age 87, of Rome, GA, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 29, 2025, at a local hospital.
Mary Helen was born on February 10, 1938, in Gadsden, Alabama, daughter of the late Leroy Whorton and the late Helen Sizemore Whorton. She was also preceded in death by her husbands, Jimmy Gresham, David Headrick, and James McGregor; and her sons, David Gresham and Jeffrey Gresham.
Mary Helen lived a life defined by grit, determination, intelligence, and an unwavering commitment to the people she loved. While raising her family, she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Accounting from Athens State University through night classes, later completing her Master of Science in Business Management at the University of Alabama at Huntsville. She built a groundbreaking career, rising from bookkeeper to controller in ConAgra's Poultry division, a role held by few women in that time. She served her community as a member of the Cahaba Shrine Temple in Huntsville, a past President of the Rome Shrine Ladies, and a committed volunteer at West Rome Baptist Church and Floyd Medical Center. Mary Helen was known for her sharp mind, her ability to solve any problem put in front of her, and her effortless humor.
What defined her most was the way she loved. She treasured the beach, the mountains, and a good sunset, but nothing meant more to her than her family and friends. Mary Helen was the kind of person who showed up, listened, encouraged, and loved with her whole heart. To her children and grandchildren, she gave a steady, lifelong promise often wrapped in the familiar tune she sang for decades: "I love you a bushel and a peck". Her life was marked by strength, service, laughter, and unwavering devotion, and her legacy lives on in every person she supported, challenged, and loved so fiercely.
Survivors include her son, Larry Gresham (Katherine); her daughter, Kyra Hammond; stepsons, Allen McGregor, Walter McGregor (Elana), Robert McGregor (Petra), and Andrew McGregor; her grandchildren, Joshua Gresham, Jessica Laws, Christopher Gresham, Justin Gresham, Jacy Hopkins, Zachary Gresham, Connor Hammond, Kelsey Hammond, Delaney Hammond, and Chase Hammond; her step grandchildren, Kimberley Morrow, Quincie Fulmer, Brooke McGregor, Brandi Butler, Errica de los Reyes and Samantha McGregor; 12 great grandchildren and 16 step-great grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, at 2:00pm at West Rome Baptist Church, with Pastor Jarrod Roberts officiating and her grandson, Joshua Gresham, delivering the eulogy. Interment will follow in Oaknoll Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, from 12:30pm until the hour of service at West Rome Baptist Church.
Pallbearers are asked to assemble at the church by 1:30pm on Wednesday, and include: active, Joshua Gresham, Christopher Gresham, Justin Gresham, Bradley Hopkins, Connor Hammond, and Chase Hammond: honorary, Colyn Gresham.
