Mary McQueen Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Young Levett Funeral Home - Covington on Feb. 19, 2026.
We celebrate the Home Going of a life well lived by Mary Virginia McQueen, who was a devoted follower of Christ and entered the presence of the Lord on January 29, 2026.

Mary Virginia Johnson was born on November 26, 1941 to Jessie and Annie Mae Johnson in Louisville, Mississippi. She graduated from Louisville Negro High School as valedictorian of her class. She married Josh McQueen and moved to Cleveland, Ohio. From this union came three beautiful daughters: Ethlyn, Teresa, and Yvette.

After moving to Cleveland, she pursued becoming a nurse's aide at various hospitals in the Cleveland area. She retired from AT&T, formally Ohio Bell, after 25 years of service. She then enrolled in Cuyahoga Community College where she completed her studies and received an associate's degree. While enrolled in courses there, Mary entered employment with the college until her second retirement.

Mary accepted the Lord at a young age and was baptized. Her love for the Lord inspired her to become a scholar of the Word of God. She enrolled in Moody Bible Institute evening classes, taught Sunday school in Cleveland, Ohio, and Jacksonville, Florida, and led women's and single ministries over the years. She spent countless hours listening to and counseling people, always giving them what the Lord would have for them to know from His Word.

After retiring, she loved to travel with her daughters. She loved spending time with her daughters, sons-in-law, and grandchildren. She was so thankful she was able to live to see and spend time with her nine great-grandchildren.

Some who are left to celebrate her home going include her three daughters Ethlyn McQueen-Gibson (Carl); Teresa Thompson (Rufus Jr.); and Yvette McQueen; six grandchildren (Faith, Carla, David, Daniel, Joshua, and Rufus III); nine great-grandchildren; her siblings John, Jessie, Jimmie Lewis, Napoleon, and Eugenia; and a host of nieces, nephews, loved ones, and friends.

Those who have preceded her in death are her parents Jessie and Annie Mae Johnson, sisters Bertha McQueen and Melinda Wells, and brothers Harvey and Melvin Johnson.

Mary is at peace now with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. We rejoice because of the promise of eternal life. She would say, "It is well with my soul."

Celebration of Life Memorial will be 12:00 Noon February 25, 2026 in the Chapel of Young-Levett Funeral Home, Covington. The family will receive friends from 11:00 A.M. until the hour of service.
