Mary Ellen Mitchell

Mary Ellen Mitchell, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on November 4, 2025, at the age of 87. Born on September 6, 1938, in Marshfield, Missouri, Mary lived a life filled with hard work, love, and joy. Growing up with her siblings, she quickly learned the value of family and hard work, often milking cows and chopping wood for their stove.
Mary was married to Lewis Mitchell, with whom she shared many joyful years, and together they welcomed two sons, Greg and Lee, and a daughter, Lucy. Known for her warm smile and friendly demeanor, Mary thrived as a waitress, serving meals and sharing laughter with patrons at various establishments, including Howard Johnson's.
A woman of diverse interests, Mary loved the thrill of watching NASCAR races, feeling the excitement with every lap. She also had a penchant for games of chance, enjoying many trips to Las Vegas and local casinos to play poker and indulge in her love for Bingo. These activities brought her much joy, but nothing compared to the happiness she derived from her family. She was, above all, a proud grandmother who cherished watching her grandchildren grow, particularly as they played sports and took part in family gatherings.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents Albert and Janie (Wood) Haymes, her husband, Lewis Mitchell, a daughter Lucy Smith, and a grandson Sheldin Mitchell as well as her siblings Jay Haymes, Charles Haymes, Margaret Schultz, Norma McQueen, Rosa Mae Benskin, Butch Haymes and infant sisters Ermma Sue and Betty Lou Haymes.
Mary is survived by her two sons, Greg and Lee Mitchell; her grandchildren Braedyn Mitchell, Ashley Clinton, Tony Smith, and Amanda Dean; and her beloved sisters, Sharon Smith, Dorothy Conway, Dee Lowry, and Candle Youngblood and numerous nephews and nieces. Her loved ones will forever carry the memories of her laughter and love in their hearts.
In honor of Mary's life, her family will hold a visitation at Greenlawn Funeral Home North on November 10, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., followed by a funeral service at 11:00 a.m. on the same day. She will be laid to rest in a burial ceremony at St. Luke's Cemetery near Conway, Missouri. All friends and family are invited to celebrate the remarkable life that was Mary Ellen Mitchell, who not only touched the lives of those around her but also reminded us of the importance of family, laughter, and love.
