Roy Michael Mitchell

Roy Mike Mitchell, age 80, passed away on November 1, 2025, in Winters, Texas. He was born in Winters on September 22, 1945, to Audra and Lila Mitchell. He attended school in Winters and graduated in 1963 from Winters High School. After graduation, he attended Texas Tech, where he graduated with a degree in Agricultural Economics.
Upon graduation, he was commissioned through the Army ROTC and went on active duty. He attended Infantry Officer Basic at Ft. Benning, Georgia, followed by Airborne and Ranger Schools. He was sent to Vietnam, 4th Infantry Division, U.S. Army Vietnam, serving as the Reconnaissance Platoon Leader in an Infantry Battalion. His rank was 1st Lieutenant. He was awarded the Bronze Star as well as several other medals. After being honorably discharged from the Army, he returned to the Pumphrey area to farm.
On September 28, 1974, he married Linda Owen. They had two sons, Jason and Justin. He was a devoted husband and father, and he taught his sons to work hard and love the land. Mike was active in the community, serving as president of the first Young Farmers Association, and serving on both the North Runnels Water Board and the North Runnels Hospital Board. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Winters where he served as a deacon. He also established and led an early Thursday morning nondenominational prayer group that met from 1996 to the present.
Mike is survived by his wife of 51 years, Linda; his son Jason Mitchell and wife Andrea; his granddaughters, Lexie, Katie, Maddie, and Lauren; his sister, Marilyn Rock; his brother A.L. Mitchell and wife Carol; and his brother-in-law Brian Owen and wife Kathleen. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Preceding him in death are his parents, Audra and Lila Mitchell; his son, Justin Mitchell; his sister, Elizabeth Young; his brothers-in-law, Bob Rock and Garner Young; and his nephew, Jeff Young.
A service will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, November 14, at the First Baptist Church in Winters. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the First Baptist Church of Winters, the Winters Public Library, or a charity of your choice.
