Mary Elizabeth (O'Brien) Murphy, of Swampscott formerly of Acton, passed away March 23, 2025 at the age of 88. She was the beloved wife of the late Richard Goldsmith Murphy.
Born to the late William and Catherine (Grady) O'Brien, Mary grew up in Dorchester, the oldest of 6 O'Brien children. She left home at age 18 and spent 9 years in a convent pursuing her vocation to become a nun. Before taking her vows, she left the convent to become a wife, mother, homemaker and bookkeeper.
Later, Mary pursued her passion to serve others by earning a degree in nursing which she used to care for those in nursing homes and rehabilitation hospitals. After many years she returned to work in the church, serving as house mother to priests at the rectory of St. Elizabeth of Hungary parish in Acton, Mass. Mary was well known in her parish and community for her faith, devotion and kindness. In her retirement she would be seen assisting elderly parishioners with their shopping, groceries and doctor's appointments after attending daily Mass. She loved and cherished prayer, faith, family, friends and (most of all) her grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, Mary is predeceased by her sister Catherine and brother Billy. She is survived by her children, Christopher Murphy and his wife Shana of Danvers and Aidan Murphy and his wife Nicole of Beverly. She was the cherished grandmother of Jaxon (16), Jillian (14), Cameron (13), June (12) and Marlowe Murphy (10). Mary was the dear sister of Anna, Paul and Nora. She is also survived by her
beloved sisters-in-law and her nieces, nephews and their families
A Funeral Mass will be held Monday, April 14, 2025 at 10 AM at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Parish, 89 Arlington Street, Acton. Private burial to take place at a later date.
