Mary Murray-Stombaugh Obituary

Mary Angela Murray-Stombaugh, 96, of Cabot, formerly of New Kensington and Winter Haven, FL, died Monday, Jan. 26, 2026, after a short illness. She lovingly went into her Savior's arms with family members by her side. Born July 2, 1929, in Emmitsburg, MD, Mary tended to follow her brother Joe wherever he went, which brought her to New Kensington in 1950. She worked for PPG in Creighton, where she met the love of her life and husband, John Jay Murray. They were married on Feb. 4, 1951, and lived in New Kensington until she once again followed her brother Joe and his wife Irene "Renee" Boland to Winter Haven, FL, in 1990, where she and John resided during the winter months every year. After the passing of her nine-year-old son Jimmy in 1969, Mary was so moved by the nurses who cared for her son that she went back to school at Citizens General Hospital's LPN School of Nursing, graduated in 1970, and worked at The Pittsburgh Hospital (which eventually merged and formed the Forbes Health System). She was a member of Amplify Church in Plum since 1979 (formerly known as Pittsburgh East Full Gospel). She served as president of the PTA Council, vice president of the Citizens Advisory Board for the City of New Kensington, president of the AGLOW New Kensington/Springdale Council, CTV Ministries telephone counselor, and Sunday school teacher. She enjoyed sewing, baking, bowling, swimming, biking, walking, playing (and winning at) Scrabble, and spending time with her family. In addition to love of family, Mary was known for her deep faith and love for Jesus. She is survived by her four children. Mary Kathleen (Carl) Schreiber of Oakmont, John Patrick (Rhonda) Murray of Williamsport, Amy Susan (Don) Berry of Kittanning, and Elizabeth Ann (Jeff) Mazur of Allegheny Township; grandchildren, Eric and Jeffrey Schreiber, Paul and David Murray, Donald and Michael Berry, Sarah (Calvin) Barton, and Brandon (Kendall) Mazur; great-grandchildren, Jase and Caroline Barton; sister, Rose Gilland of Greencastle; and many dear nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Sarah Boland, nee Winebrenner; first husband, John Murray; second husband, Merle Stombaugh; son, James Joseph Murray; brothers, Joseph, Donald, and Patrick Boland; sisters, Laura, Betty, and Violet; and son-in-law, Larry Pellegrino. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, Jan. 30, 2025, at THE RUSIEWICZ OF LOWER BURRELL FUNERAL HOME, 3124 Leechburg Road at Alder St., where funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 31, 2026, by the Reverend Lee Kricher, dear friend and founding pastor of Amplify Church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in her name to Amplify Church, 9400 Saltsburg Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15239, or Good Samaritan Hospice, 116 Browns Hill Road, Suite 100, Valencia, PA 16059. www.RusiewiczFH.com. The family thanks our Lord and Savior for the mercy He bestowed on our extraordinary mother, and we thank Him for gracing us with her long life. We would also like to thank all those at the Oertel Building of Concordia Lutheran Ministries in Cabot for the exceptional care and authentic, unwavering love that she received from them over this past year while she was in their safekeeping.

Mary and John were wonderful friends. My wife and I met them at church in the 1980´s. They were wonderful examples of a loving couple who influenced us as a young couple. We are so grateful for the chance to get to know them. Mary always had a humorous and special place in our hearts. We are grateful for the legacy of their children and grandchildren. God bless the Murray Family.
