Mary Matilda Scott Culpepper, 91, of Lynchburg, Virginia transitioned on Monday July 21, 2025, at the Summit Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was the daughter of the late John Daniel Scott and Anna Lee Jackson Scott, and the wife of her former spouse, the late Roosevelt Culpepper. Mary was also preceded in death by her sister, Alene Anna Scott Leftwich and her nephew, Thomas I. Cannon (Scott).
Mary was born on November 9, 1933, in Lynchburg, Virginia. She graduated from Dunbar High School, class of 1952.
She was a faithful member of 8th Street Baptist Church. She enjoyed shopping at Roses and the Dollar Tree. She also found pleasure in crocheting, cooking, playing piano, gardening, and making dandelion wine. She was well known for her delicious hermit cakes.
Mary leaves to treasure her memory two daughters, Lisa Culpepper-Beverley and Sandra Haythe (Greg); devoted niece, Matilda R. Scott; three grandchildren, Qiana M. Beverley, LaShelle P. Williams, and Jhamal X. Beverley; three bonus-grandchildren, Sharniqua, Shakiva, and Malaysia Haythe; six great-grandchildren, Xavier L. Beverley, Kyleigh M. Tanner, Remington L. Pride, Harmony Haythe, Ivorie Haythe, and Maddison Haythe.
She also leaves behind a devoted sister-in-law, Betty M. Culpepper; former son-in-law, Kenneth L. Beverley; and a devoted family friend, Rosser “Jack” Williams. The family would like to give special thanks and appreciation to the staff of the Summit and Heartland Hospice, especially Michelle, Shirley, Mahogany, Victoria, Rita, Tammy, Faye, Rosa, Jill, Michelle, and Tawanda.
A celebration of Mary’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday July 27, 2025, at Tharp Funeral Home Lynchburg Chapel. The family will be receiving family and friends at 687 Vineyard Road Concord, Virginia, the home of Sandra and Greg Haythe daily from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
