Mary Jo Salvon, 83, passed away on November 11, 2025. She was born in Springfield, MA on September 25, 1942, to the late Daniel and Mary (Doherty) McLaughlin of Donegal Ireland. Mary Jo attended Holy Name School, graduated from Cathedral High School in the Class of 1959 and in 1962, graduated from Mercy Hospital Nursing School. To Mary Jo, "nursing school was the opportunity to live away from home with 31 other girls doing the same thing for 3 years. The best part was finishing with an education in a profession that was ours forever." Forever turned out to be 50 years with Mercy Hospital but a nurse consultant for life.
Besides her parents, Mary Jo was predeceased by her husband of 45 years, Joseph B. Salvon and her brother Daniel McLaughlin. To cherish her memory, she leaves her loving children, Michael R. Salvon and his wife, Jennifer, Joseph C. Salvon and his wife, Anne Marie and Kara K. Morrison and her husband, Peter; her Super seven cherished grandchildren, Thomas (Lauren), Meghan, Ally (Patrick), Mary (Cam), Abigail, Joseph B. and Jayme; her sisters-in-law Genevieve McLaughlin, Mary Salvon and Annie Julian, along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She will be missed by scores of friends, grand friends and of course her treasured Bella Donnas.
Time spent with family and friends is paramount to the Salvon :) way. There was not an inch of Forest Park, Blandford Ski Center, Wilder Family Center, McCrays Farm or Crescent Beach (Maine) that Mary Jo did not cover with family and friends by her side always. Find one of the 40ers ski club members and they can tell you some stories. Friday night Cards on the porch with Anne Marie and Tommy Russo was a mainstay. Travel with Chris and Dave Keaney, always an adventure. Book club, horse race betting and Christmas caroling were favorites with her Bella Donnas. From Massachusetts to Maine to New York, she loved whatever activity the Super 7 were performing in, competing in or just a game of Sorry, she was there for it.
After retirement, Mary Jo loved her time volunteering in the BayState pediatric wing rocking, holding and loving newborns. Her beloved sister-in-law, Adele Porcello, once told her, babies are the vitamins we all need.
Family and friends are invited to gather on Sunday, November 16, 2025 from 2 – 5 PM at Forastiere Smith Funeral & Cremation, 220 North Main Street, East Longmeadow. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will take place Monday, November 17, 2025 at 11 AM in Sacred Heart Church, 395 Chestnut Street, Springfield. Friends and relatives are requested to meet directly at Sacred Heart. Private Burial will be in St. Michael's Cemetery, State Street, Springfield.
