Mary Tidwell Obituary

From her birth, Mary Catherine Tidwell was beautiful and spirited. Born to Don and Margie Tidwell on September 19, 1989 in Abilene, Texas, she arrived with the spirit that would mark all her days. Demanding an emergency C-section to bring her into the light, she let it be known that she would always be a force to be reckoned with. Blessed with two adoring older brothers, Sam and Joe, she gave notice that she was the queen of her world and wouldn't take any of their nonsense and learned as she grew just how to work those big boys and their friends.
Growing up in Albany, she was a member of the AHS Class of 2008 and from there she launched herself. Mary Catherine seemed not to be at home in a city that didn't begin with an "A". Albany, Abilene, Austin, San Antonio all were home to her at one time or another and in all of them, she left a beautiful, kind and loving legacy. She was a diamond with many facets; from barrel racing when she was a kid, to being a cosmetologist, to being a DJ known to her audiences as "Mary Millions", she sparkled. Her sincerity and kindness led to her being a much-demanded speaker for NA groups all over Texas; she touched people with her heart and honesty and genuine care. During her days at the Hard Rock Cafe, her tips reflected how much people appreciated her caring and attention - she loved them and they loved her back. We all did and were blessed that she loved us, too.
She loved her cats and horses, to the extent that one summer she wore her horse T-shirt every day after her Mom had to wash it while she was asleep. She rode in "Six Bright Flags" in the Fort Griffin Fandangle, much to her joy. Mary Catherine was artistic, creative, brilliantly witty - a mermaid with a wicked laugh. Her friendships were forever and her kindness unbounded. She carried a sadness, though, as the loss of her precious brother, Sam, was always with her. It didn't prevent her generous spirit from seeing needs and filling them or loving those who needed it. In spite of her fashion choices, her heart was never dark, never closed. Wherever she lived, people gravitated to her wit, her kindness and her spirit.
On July 19, 2024, God decided it was time for her to come home. Heaven needed her more than we did. She leaves behind her parents, Margie Tidwell and Don Tidwell (Sunday); her brother Joe, his wife, Belynda, nephews, Samuel Ray, Grayson and niece, Poppy; uncle and aunt, Bob Ed and Debbie Johnson and cousins, Jared (Shelby) and family, and Jamie Johnson Sehanobish (Shawn) and their family; uncle and aunt, Bob and Pam Tidwell, and cousins, Lee White (Barry) and their family, Lindsey Gore (Patrick) and their family, and Ted Tidwell (Chloe) and their family; aunt and uncle, Lynn and Dan Neff and cousins, Jacob Scarbrough (Diana) and Rachel Cole (Justin) and their family; and extended family and friends beyond counting. Preceding her were her brother, Sam Tidwell; and her grandparents, Elmer and Pat Tidwell and Bob and Mary Johnson.
The family requests that memorials be made to The Sam Tidwell Memorial Scholarship or to the Kevin Ruff Memorial Scholarship Fund, and may be left at Morehart Mortuary.
Mary Catherine will be remembered at her funeral service on Thursday, July 25, at 2:00 p.m. at Matthews Memorial Presbyterian Church in Albany, Texas.

It's not a stretch to say that I wouldn't be who I am today if it hadn't been for Mary. I wasn't doing that great personally when I met Mary. I had JUST begun my transition. I didn't even know who I was. It was like a year before the COVID-19 Pandemic. A friend of mine brought me to the AMP Room in San Antonio where Mary was spinning all the Goth classics for her Sisters of Monday gig with her main squeeze. When we met, were instant friends. I don't recall feeling more accepted and cared about in her company. Thank you Mary! I'm here to celebrate you and your live out loud life!!!! And to tell you how loved you are by me and everyone who knew you!!! It hurts me soooo much that you're gone....I always thought I'd see you on the dance floor again.... until that day, Dance on, my Dark Queen!!!

I had the pleasure of always serving her Titos with redbull. I worked 16 years on the Riverwalk and knew Mary when she was at hard rock. She will be missed and remember as a icon In the Goth Scene

I knew Mary in Abilene. She was a person that wanted to help others and spoke openly and honestly. We lived together for a couple of years and shared a lot of memories during that time. Though we both went different directions in life, I have always considered Mary one of my best friends in my lifetime. I am incredibly sorry and effected by her loss. I love her mother Margie very deeply and consider her a close friend too.

My deepest sympathy to everyone who loved Mary and her family. I never had the honor of meeting Mary in person but I had seen her videos and pictures. She truly was one of a kind and absolutely stunning in her own way. The world is a little darker without her beautiful light but I hope her family and close friends find comfort in knowing Mary will be watching over everyone. Until one day we are all reunited in the next life. She will never be forgotten. I truly believe it's not goodbye, it's until we meet again. Thank you Mary for being an incredible inspiration and individual.

Mary, we went the closest of friends but I definitely considered you one. You laughter was contagious and spread a smile on my face the first time I got to meet you. I know your life wasn't the easiest..and you were vocal about the struggles that plaqued you. I'll forever admire that quality. I love how excited you got for all the kitties..and I remember a group chat where we all sent pictures of our cats to cheer each other up. We were supposed to bring our kitties in their backpack bubbles to meet up.. im sorry we didn't have a chance to bring you that joy. It goes without saying that every goth group I'm in has a tribute for you..we will never hear that hearty "yaw'll" from across a loud crowded room but it will forever be embedded in my mind.

I can't wait to meet you in another life. Til then: pet all the kitties you can, rest easy and fly high!

RIP Mary Your beautiful, bright, enveloping presence had such an impact on me and all around you, I hope your soul can feel how much the world loves you. I´ll never forget when your cat got stuck in a tree and you found her and got help to "rescue those beans." I cherished you and your cat every time I saw you during DJ live streams. You even supported my fundraiser for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society by DJing Barakah in my time of need. Love and respect to you and all your loved ones.

The first time I ever finally got to meet her was after she DJed at Club Elysium during one of my visits to Austin long ago. She was so shy and worried that her set didn't impress, when in fact it was the best I had danced to in a long time. I was immediately taken in by just how adorably kind, open-hearted, and eager she was to meet me and my girlfriend at the time. She seemed to have no idea of her beauty, energy, and talent. During Covid lockdowns, I looked forward to every single stream of The Sisters of Mondays. She was always so glad to see me log in and chat, and always so happy to play our requests. She was the most energetic DJ I've ever known. Every song she shared with us had a whole dance routine and lip sync to go with it. She kept me alive and sane during one of the worst times of my life when I didn't know what tomorrow would bring.

The last time me and her saw each other, she was sitting with my now fiance at Cream unknown to me while I danced with some random people. She was getting to know her and I didn't know this until just the other night, after her passing. After Jessica told me, I knew that Mary was making sure that I was with someone who would take care of me and protect me and truly love me. She was always watching out for people in relationships like that. I'll never forget her and I'll always miss her. I've lost friends before, but Mary's departing leaves a forever open wound in so many of us. I know she'll already have a flyer spread out for the goth club so we know where to go, no matter what afterlife I end up in.

Mary has been an incredible friend to me for over 5 years. Any time I was goin through something, I knew I could pick up the phone and call her. She´d invite me over and we´d sit and talk for hours. A few years ago my children and I were in a bit of a living situation. We were staying in an hotel for awhile until Mary talked to her old landlord and got us in our apartment. Almost 4 years and we´re still here. I´m incredibly blessed to have had Mary in my life and to genuinely call her my friend. Oh how I´ll miss you my dear friend. Until we meet again
