Mary Carla Wallace
Mary "Carla" Wallace, 71 of Alsey, passed away Saturday, November 8, 2025, in St Louis. She was born December 19, 1953, in Appalachia, VA, the daughter of the late Walter and Aileen Carroll Pennington. She was a graduate of Powell Valley High School and Mountain Empire Community College. She married Samuel Wallace on Valentines Day 1984 in Big Stone Gap, VA, after meeting through a radio program and exchanging love letters for three months before they married. Carla worked as a dispatcher for Big Stone Gap, VA, Scott County Sherrif, Roodhouse Police, and as a reporter for the Scott County Times. She was also a talented musician and singer, teaching music at the Alsey School, private piano teacher and pianist for Alsey Baptist Church. Carla was a joy filled woman of faith who enjoyed good conversation and never met a stranger. God and her family were the most important things in her life.
Surviving are her daughters, Jeanette Wallace and Sami (Mike) DeLong both of Alsey; granddaughter, Lucy DeLong; sister, Anita Wade of Big Stone Gap, VA; and brother, Neil Pennington of California; along with several nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Sam Wallace, in 2022; brother, Charles Walter Pennington; and sister, Lori Gail Pennington.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, November 13, 2025 at the Coonrod Funeral Home in Winchester. Burial will be in Bowers Cemetery near Alsey. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials can be made to her family.
