Mary Louise Wygant Smith, 93, of Croasdaile Village, Durham, died on November 7, 2025, with her two loving daughters at her side. She was predeceased by her husband, Reverend Marshall Lee Smith, in 2006. Mrs. Smith was a retired nurse.
In addition to her daughters, Marcia Louise Nye and her husband Geoffrey, of Cooperstown, NY; and Cherri Lee Smith and her partner Steven Woodruff, of Hillsborough; she is survived by her granddaughter, Katherine Louise Nye and her husband Brett Shirley, of Park City, UT.
Born in Poughkeepsie, NY, on September 6, 1932, Mrs. Smith graduated from Peace College in Raleigh in 1952 and Cornell University - New York Hospital School of Nursing in 1955.
Reverend and Mrs. Smith were married on July 31, 1960, in Manhattan. In addition to her more than 30-year nursing career, she and her husband served multiple congregations in New York State and North Carolina. They "retired" to North Carolina in 1981, where they continued working and volunteering in the community. After Reverend Smith's death, Mrs. Smith moved to Croasdaile Village where she enjoyed meeting new friends and caring for her neighbors.
A memorial service will be held in Few Chapel, Croasdaile Village, on November 10, 2025, at 1:30 pm. Internment will be in Arlington National Cemetery, beside her husband. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Red Cross or the Animal Protection Society of Durham.
