Carol Roller Litchfield
December 29, 1946-November 5, 2025
Carol Roller Litchfield lived her life helping others gain education, enabling them to enjoy a higher quality of life. She was a passionate dog lover who rescued her poodles from abandonment and gave them a healthy happy future, sparing no effort to provide for their welfare. She was an avid gardener who loved to create beautiful landscapes around each home, and she was an avid birdwatcher and guardian of nature. She supported charities worldwide to provide medical care and food for humans and animals in need. Everyone who knew her saw her passion for goodness and her focus on making the world a better place.
Carol was born at Ft. Eustis, Virginia Base Hospital. Her parents were Colonel Thomas A. Roller and Pauline Spanger Roller of Williamsburg, VA and Lebanon, PA. She was raised in Virginia, Pennsylvania, Alaska, and France, and graduated from the American High School in Orleans, France. She returned to the US to attend William & Mary College in Williamsburg, majoring in French. She earned a teaching certificate as part of her college education. She later earned a master's degree in Reading Education from East Carolina University.
In October 1966 she and David met and in July 1968 they were married in the Wren Chapel at William & Mary and began a marriage of over 57 years. Carol and David began a 30 plus year career in Marine Corps in 1969, during which she supported his service in Viet Nam, North Carolina, California, Japan, Korea, the Philippines, Operation Desert Storm/Desert Shield, Quantico, and Washington with many long separations, while she worked and raised their sons Gavin and Derek. Carol taught at three different North Carolina Community Colleges, Dixon High School in Sneads Ferry, NC, and spent many years teaching in The Prince William County Virginia School System, focusing on adult reading education and elementary level reading. She helped hundreds of students learn to read and literally gave them a new lease on life. Carol was an avid reader herself and active book club member wherever she lived.
Carol was a loving mother to her sons Gavin and Derek and worked hard to prepare them to learn and value education and set high standards for their moral development.
Carol loved traveling to Emerald Isle, NC to her family beach house and was so happy for over 30 years to walk her dogs on the beach, create a beautiful Azelea filled landscape and spend time with family and friends. It was her favorite place in the world.
Carol served on the Board of Directors of the Prince William County SPCA and helped lead the project to build a new County Animal Shelter and worked for many years to place animals for adoption. She served as a Police Volunteer at the Shelter.
Carol is survived by her husband Colonel David Litchfield, USMC, Ret, her sons Gavin Litchfield and wife Kimberly, Derek Litchfield and wife Jean and grandson Lincoln, her brother Thomas Roller and wife Donna, niece Casey Roller and nephew John Roller and wife Lauren and sons Ian and Fred, and her sister-in-law Miriam Litchfield. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Kim Martens, and nephew Jake Litchfield, his wife Dr. Leah Litchfield, their daughters Elena and Vivian and her nephew Aaron Litchfield and his wife Hannah.
