Matt J. McDermott, 67, of
Sullivan, Missouri, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 3, 2025 at Missouri Baptist Sullivan Hospital – with his loving family at his side.
Matthew John McDermott was born on October 21, 1957, in Saint Louis, Missouri, to the late Andrew and Mary (John) McDermott. Growing up in Kirkwood, Matt was a proud student of Kirkwood High School. His sense of duty and patriotism led him to enlist in the US Army, where he served his country honorably as a combat engineer. After receiving an honorable discharge, Matt transitioned back to civilian life and began working as a mechanic for AAMCO Transmission. It was during this time that he was blessed with his first child, Tammy.
Matt's heart found its match when he met Sylvia Calhoun through a mutual friend. After only four months of dating, Matt and Sylvia were united in marriage on July 12, 1984. Their love blossomed with the arrival of twin daughters, Tara and Tori, and together they raised their family in Kirkwood. Matt continued providing for his family and worked for the Kirkwood Athletic Association.
Eventually, Matt and his family moved to Sullivan, where he worked various jobs before joining the team at Valvoline. For over a decade, he was a dedicated employee until his early retirement due to health concerns.
Matt was an avid train enthusiast, creating model railways that showcased his artistic talent with their intricate landscapes and miniature buildings. His love for rock and roll music was a constant in his life, with KSHE 95 often providing the soundtrack to his days. Bands like Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, and Janis Joplin were among his favorites.
A talented cook, Matt's skill at the grill was legendary, especially his BBQ ribs, which were a highlight at the family BBQs he loved to host. He was a social butterfly, always ready to lend a hand or share a laugh, and his outgoing nature made him beloved by many.
Above all, Matt cherished his role as a grandfather and adored his grandchildren. He also shared a special bond with his Husky, Jemma. Jemma was a true companion to Matt in his later years, bringing him comfort and joy.
Matt loved the Lord and followed in believers' baptism in 2004. He will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered by his family and many friends.
He is survived by his loving wife of nearly 41 years, Sylvia McDermott of
Sullivan, Missouri; his three daughters: Tammy McDermott of Jackson, Missouri, Tara Norvell and husband Dustin of
