On the 12th anniversary of Operation Red Wings, we pause to pay tribute to Matthew Axelson and to wish his family every good memory as they gather to remember a special man. Time goes by but courage, patriotism and a love of those with whom they served remain constant and a fitting memorial to all who made that amazing effort.

Tomorrow the movie "Lone Survivor" opens here in Australia. While I'm sure that it tells much of what occurred on that mountain, I know that without the effort, courage and ultimate sacrifice of yourself, Murphy and Dietz there would be no story. You each remain honoured and respected by all who were privileged to know you, and by those of us who only learned of you in later times. Rest in peace PO2 Axelson.

I did not know Matt but I sure wish I did. I believe he is one of those few people who make others lives better. He truly was a warrior and a wonderful son, brother, and person as well. I wish nothing but the best for his family and friends as this world is now a less of a better place because he is gone. He is watching us all from heaven and smiling as we miss him every minute of every day. God bless Matt, and all of his family and friends. And god bless he United States Navy SEALS.

I hope that the coming anniversary of the passing of this fine young man, along with his team mates, will bring some peace to those who love him. Time moves on and much has changed since that terrible day in 2005, but what remains unchanged is the courage, decency, humanity and service to country displayed by Matthew, Danny Dietz and Mike Murphy. Remembering also those who died trying to rescue them.

We would like to express our deepest condolences and also to let the Axelson Family know that we recently sent Care Packages to American troops in Afghanistan. Today we pause to honor the life, service and memory of a fine young American. Sadly Matthew, Mike and Danny weren't granted the gift of a long life, and the world is the poorer for that. Those who love him, those who served with him and those who called him friend have had to move on with their lives without the benefit of his presence - and while everyone would wish that circumstances had been different, Matthew has left a lasting legacy to all, even those of us not fortunate enough to know him personally. Anyone reading of the action in which he died will understand that he was a person of uncompromising integrity and courage and I can only hope that those who love him will have peace as they approach this anniversary of his passing.

I never got the pleasure of meeting you. I am a Sonar Technician Seaman, stationed out in Pearl Harbor. I went to "A" School in San Diego, and walked through the lounge of Fleet Anti-Submarine Warfare Training Center, where your memory stays strong within the Sonar Technician community. I had the privilege of knowing Michael Murphy, and I'm sure you were as great a man as Michael was. Thank you for defending this country the best way that you could.

I just finished reading the book LONE SURVIVOR. Axe's heroism was amazing and wish that he could still be with your family. He protected his team as long as he lived and his toughness and
shooting skills were sure to have helped them survive as long as they did. Marcus is alive because of him (when Marcus pulled Danny out of the line of fire and was almost shot).May God bless him and your family.America will never forget him.

To the Axelson family,
I am 14 years old and know this may not mean much. I recently did a devotional for my Bible class and used Matthew as my example. I wanted to post this. I apologize for it's length.
SACRIFICE
I recently read two World War II stories. They both seemed so similar, until I reached their conclusions. One was of a marine soldier who was fighting in Iwo Jima. Sitting in a Fox Hole, Jackyln Lucas hurled himself onto a grenade to protect his fellow marines. As he did this, another grenade landed nearby, and thinking swiftly Jackyln pulled that one under his body as well. The grenades detonated, sending heated shrapnel into his body. Miraculously, Jackyln survived the blast and received the Medal of Honor. He was only fourteen years old when this took place. The other story also shows the story of sacrifice. Petty Officer 2nd Class Matthew Axelson was part of a four man Navy SEAL team stationed in Asadabad, Afghanistan. They were on a recon mission when the four man team was overwhelmed by over thirty insurgents. Digging in, they realized they desperately needed help. After calling in back up, a Chinook helicopter was soon on it’s way carrying sixteen combat ready soldiers. But the Chinook helicopter was quickly shot down, killing all sixteen aboard. Knowing his chances were slim, Axelson and fellow Petty Officer Dietz started to fight back. The team only had three members left as an earlier shot had killed one of the SEALs. Axelson and Dietz kept fighting, until their third man was able to escape the fight. Soon after his escape, both Axelson and Dietz were over run. How could God allow three brave men to undergo these circumstances, at the costs of two lives? But we often forget that God sent Jesus to die for us! He was the ultimate sacrifice for our sins. Jesus died and then went to Heaven where He is now preparing a place for us. We also should sacrifice our lives to God, and die daily to selfish desires and wants. “There is no greater love then this; that man lays down his own life for a friend”. (John 15:13)

Know that I am praying for your family. Thannk you for your sacrifice.

Prayer for Peace

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace;
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
And where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master,
Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
To be understood, as to understand;
To be loved, as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive,
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Amen

Four years have passed since Matt died, but the memory of his heroism, devotion to duty and support of his mates remains clear and shining bright. The world has changed much in this period but one thing remains untouched, and that's the regard in which you, Mike Murphy and Danny Dietz are held, both by those who knew you in life and others, like myself, who came to know about you later on.
Rest in peace Matt, and God bless your family, loved ones and your Country.

To the family and friends of Matthew, I realize there is nothing novel I might say that hasn't been said already. I seem to find myself thinking about this great young man, and his courageous teammates, on a daily basis. Know that every citizen of this great country who has knowledge of what took place that day in the mountains of Afghanistan feels the pain of your loss...and some long to have been there with those young men to assist in the fight. Having recently finished "The Lone Survivor", I feel even more pride in being an American, more proud of gallant men such as these SEALs, and more driven to remind people why they paid the ultimate price...fighting an enemy who still wishes us harm. God Bless and keep the family of Matthew Axelson, as well as his friends and teammates.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Matthew, but I am remembering

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

When we heard of his death along with the other Navy SEALs, we started a golf tournament in their honor. Today it's both a privilege and an honor to sign this memorial page for Matthew Axelson. I've read much about the actions of Matthew and his fellow SEAL's on that day, and while I can only offer words, which are never enough to heal the pain for those who loved them, I hope sincerely that all of those words printed here, from people in different parts of the world who didn't know Matthew, to those nearest and dearest, may be of some comfort as you move forward in life without him beside you.
Sleep well Petty Officer Axelson. You served with pride, you put others before yourself and you were faithful to the end. You truly honored those SEALs who went before you, and you've set a higher bar for those who follow in your footsteps.

My heart goes out to you at this time and in the days ahead. I truly believe that Matt was doing exactly what he wanted to be doing in life. As a fellow SEAL, I believe he would want us to celebrate all the special contributions he has made to our lives. Peace be with you brother. Hooyah!

Matt Axelson, RIP. I wish his family to know he died honorably, doing what SEAL warriors do. Always willing to risk their lives for their comrades and just causes. They lead the way. That's what heroes do. Hooyah, my green brother !

For one of those that paid the ultimate price for the freedoms we have today. Thank you for saving the life of a dear friend from Union City California JD (Jim Dickson). My God and his staff of fellow Veterans keep you safe always.

Cindy and Matt's family, I can only pray that you continue to heal and move on with your lives. It might be a little empty, but he is in a heavenly place now. Please take care.

I owe my life to Navy SEALs. What a great bunch of guys! "Fair winds and a following sea" from a Vietnam sailor.

Father we entrust our brother Matthew to your mercy. You loved him greatly in this life: now that he is freed from all its cares, give him happiness and peace forever. Welcome him now into paradise where there will be no more sorrow, no more weeping or pain, but only peace and joy with Jesus your Son, and the Holy Spirit forever and ever.
May God hold Matthew in the palm of His hand. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. My deepest sympathy.

I just finished reading "Lone Survivor". I was so impressed by their actions it moved me to tears. I'm very proud of all of them. Thank you for fighting for us and untimately giving all.

I read the poem below and cannot imagine the pain from the loss of Matthew. My son Matthew(great name) is 20 and I can't think of what life would be without him. God chose us to care for them. He made a wonderful choice in you. Thank you for allowing all of us to Love your Matt. My Matt will know of yours and his sacrifice. My freedoms come from your son. May he look down and say "thanks for all you did and I'm OK".
