In Loving Memory of Matthew (Matt) Edmund Burns
Matthew (Matt) Edmund Burns, 53, of Marlborough, MA, passed away unexpectedly on April 24, 2025.
Born to Judith and the late Edward Burns, Matt was a cherished son, devoted husband, father, brother, and friend. He leaves behind his loving wife, Laurie (Batten) Burns, and their two treasured children, Luke and Cassidy. Matt is also survived by his brothers, Michael Burns and his wife Jen of Southborough, MA, and Kevin Burns and his wife Lisa of Boston, MA, Mother-in-law Maureen Batten of Billerica MA and brother-in-law Rich Batten and his wife Patricia of Newburyport MA, along with several beloved nieces and nephews.
A proud graduate of Marlborough High School's esteemed class of 1989, Matt earned his Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice from Westfield State University, later obtaining his Master's degree in the same field. His career was defined by a steadfast dedication to public service, spanning three decades within the Massachusetts trial court system. This journey culminated in his esteemed position as Assistant Chief Court Officer in Ayer, MA, where he earned widespread respect and admiration throughout the entire court system for his exemplary service and leadership.
Family was Matt's greatest passion. He cherished holidays spent with loved ones and was a familiar presence on the sidelines of youth soccer games, proudly coaching his son Luke and countless young athletes for over 15 years. He affectionately dubbed himself the "GLSCE" – Greatest Leominster Soccer Coach Ever. Matt found joy in life's simple pleasures-enjoying 80s music and films, fishing, and engaging in spirited discussions about boxing and UFC-all while filling every gathering with laughter and unforgettable stories.
Throughout his life, from his first moments to his last, Matt exemplified resilience, humor and loyalty to all. His unwavering dedication and vibrant spirit touched the hearts of those who had the privilege to know him. He will be profoundly missed and lovingly remembered.
Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, May 1st, 2025, from 4 PM to 7 PM at Short & Rowe Funeral Home, 95 W Main Street, Marlborough, MA 01752.

I am very saddened by the news of Matt´s passing. I grew up across the street and have very fond memories of playing basketball with Matt and his brothers. There were many times that we got to play ball in his driveway until the street lights came on. What I remember about Matt is he was very funny and just an all-around awesome guy. I remember the first time I saw him in his uniform when he started working within the criminal justice system. I haven´t seen Matt or his family in a very long time, but there are many memories that I have of him and his brothers and the times I spent at their house. He will definitely be missed. I am praying for his wife, his children and his family. I am praying for strength, peace and comfort for all who are close to him during this difficult time. May you rest in peace

I had the privilege of growing up across the street from the Burns family. I was the youngest in the neighborhood and always had so much fun watching Matt play basketball with all the boys. I haven´t seen him in years but have so many memories of him. My thoughts and prayers are with the family.

Matt and I worked at the Sheriffs Department years ago together and became fast friends! We had many great times together and then he moved on to Court Officer. I hadn´t seen him in years but I still considered him a good friend! I remember his brother Mike had a deal w/ Reebok,Matt used to give me Nike gear that Mike couldn´t wear due to his contract! My deepest condolences to the Burns family,Laurie and the kids! He´ll NEVER be forgotten!
