Matthew Joseph Farra entered into Glory after he died suddenly in his apartment in Las Vegas, NV. His death was confirmed on March 13, 2025. He was 37. Matthew will be remembered and much loved for his mental and artistic gifts, and his love and service to others. Matthew grew up in Brainerd, Minnesota and Columbia, SC (where he graduated from the University of SC). As an adult, he lived in Columbia, SC, Huston, TX, Venice Beach, CA, and Las Vegas, NV. He worked as a computer programmer and show producer, wedding photographer, and as a high-end restaurant server and bartender. He produced good art and played keyboard music, privately. In high school he played a Djembe hand drum in a church praise band. Matthew never married, but he had one son (Tristan, now 17) who he deeply loved and supported regularly.
Most people in life attempt to relate to others at their own socio-economic level (or aim higher). While he could very successfully work in wealthy and fancy settings, Matthew would consistently relate to the poor, broken, and dispossessed -- whether human or animal. He would often give blankets and food to homeless people. He drew abused dogs out of their shells and took care of feral cats for many years. Family members called him the “real dog and cat whisperer.” Matthew consistently said that God is bigger and greater than our concept of Him, and that we should all be “still before Him, and know that He (alone) is God.” Matthew was generous and knew how to have a good time. He loved hiking in the mountains and fishing on the open sea. His peers consistently said he was a great friend.
Matthew’s unexpected, untimely death cannot erase the light he shared or the good that he did.
Matthew is survived by his father, Stephen, his mother, Sharon, his older sister, Laura, and his older brothers and their wives: Jonathan (Rae), David (Brittney), Daniel (Sarah) and James (Ashlee). He also survived by 14 nieces and nephews and 5 cousins. Matthew Joseph Farra leaves a legacy of video/photographic excellence, compelling rhythms, the many grateful recipients of his tender care, good, long-term friendships, hilarious fun, and endless stories. He will be very sorely missed. His Memorial Service is scheduled for May 26th, 3 PM, at White Rock Baptist Church, 1409 Peacehaven RD, Chapin, SC 29036.
