Matthew Hamilton passed away on April 27, 2025, at 59 years old. Matthew has been living at Harmony – Cedar Rapids the last four years there on May 1, 2021.
Matthew was born on December 29, 1965, in Mason City, Iowa. Parents are Margie Mitchell, mother, and Patrick Hamilton, father. Matthew resided in the Boone, Ames, and Des Moines areas, until 2013, when he moved to the Cedar Rapids area.
Matthew is a member of the Oakland Church of the Nazarene in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Matthew was also a past member of the Kiwanis Aktion Club of Ames, Boone, and Marion, and the Kiwanis Sunrisers Club in Marion. Matthew liked to eat out, travel with his brother, Chris, and mother, Margie, and other friends and family. He enjoyed going on vacations and going to Chief’s games. Matthew also enjoyed going on travel trips with Camp Sunnyside and going to camp there. He loved going to Camp Courageous (when he was living in Harmony when he went to Camp Courageous, he called it his vacation). Matthew won many bowling trophies and awards in the Special Olympics. He enjoyed walking in parks and spending time with family. Matthew loved going to church, going on work and witness trips to Dilkon, Arizona, Bible studies, doing devotion and reading stories with his mother, and being a prayer warrior. He loved Jesus and looked forward to Heaven. Matthew has a special friend named Dale that was a worker of his that he has had a special friendship with for the last ten years. They did many things together like going to games, walking in stores, and going to his favorite places (Pizza Ranch, Scooters, and Theisen’s for popcorn).
Matthew is survived by his mother, Margie Mitchell, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; brother, Christopher Sobotka and wife, Myndi, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and many friends.
Matthew is preceded in death by his father, Patrick Hamilton; stepfather, Garry Mitchell; stepfather, Alan Sobotka; grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and many friends.
Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Marion, Iowa is assisting the family with arrangements.
Visitation: 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. Thursday, May 1, 2025, at Oakland Church of the Nazarene, 3000 42nd Street NE, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Funeral Service: 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 2, 2025, at Oakland Church of the Nazarene, 3000 42nd Street NE, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, with Pastor Michael Perkins doing the service. Following the service, a luncheon will be provided at 11:30 a.m. After the luncheon, Friday, May 2, 2025, the burial will be a graveside service at 3:30 p.m. at Fairview Cemetery, 1715 315th Street, 2 ½ miles north of Madrid, Iowa. Anyone is invited to come if they wish.
