June 22, 1992 - November 3, 2025

Matthew Weldon Mahoney passed away, November 3, 2025, surrounded by his fiancé and family after a long battle with melanoma. He was 33.

Matthew was born on June 22, 1992 in Memphis, TN and raised in Mt. Pleasant, MS. He graduated with a B.A. in English from Blue Mountain College and was an admired General Manager at Little Italy Pizzeria in Auburn, AL, where he worked for the past 11 years. He leaves behind his fiancé, Devon Brown, parents Amy and Shannon Mahoney, brother Daniel, Uncle John, and many friends and loved ones.

He moved to Auburn with nothing but a small savings, one local friend, and an iron will. With that, he made a life to be proud of. He became the beloved leader of a local business, grew a large group of friends, and, with his fiancé Devon, was building a life and a home.

Matthew went from teaching his uncle to play DOOM while still in diapers to learning to build computers with his dad as he grew up. He continued to teach and learn at college, tutoring his fellow students and pushing himself in both math and literature. In his own time, he voraciously read about linguistics, philosophy, history, physics, chemistry, and more. If he didn't know something, he was going to find out.

Throughout his life, when he wanted to know something, he learned everything there was to know about it, and used that knowledge to help others. Matt was the first person there when you needed help. Quiet, stalwart, witty, loving, and enduring.

Matthew's name means "gift of God." He was such a gift, and we are thankful for every moment we got to love and be loved by him.

Dear Amy, Shannon, Daniel, John & Devon,

I am heartbroken about Matthew's passing, it's just so hard to believe. And I am so sorry for your grief and pain in losing Matthew, especially before the holidays. Matthew fought so hard, and I'm sorry he lost his battle to melanoma. Please know my family & I are thinking & praying for you all every day. There isn't a day that passes that I don't think of Matthew and all of you and it breaks my heart. I grieve with you will lend my support in any way that I can.

My heart is crushed for all of you. I am truly devastated by Matthew´s passing and have been praying for God to comfort each of you in a way that only He can. It´s been years since I´ve seen Matthew in person, but for so many years I saw him every 4 weeks for a haircut. I commented often on how not many people get to hold on to that color of natural blonde hair for as long as he did. Normally people "grow" out of it, but as pictures have shown over the years Matthew did not. You simply cannot duplicate that with anything out of a bottle. Another rarity about Matthew for me was that during his appointments he actually talked to me. He would carry on whole conversations while I cut his hair. This may not seem like a big deal, but boys that age usually didn´t speak unless asked a question, much like his sweet brother Daniel, who would say just enough to let me know how he wanted his hair cut and the rest of the time it was silence. Both boys were always polite and respectful, but Matthew and I would talk and even laugh at times. He knew a lot of stuff even as a teenager that went way over my head, but it made me feel good that he wanted to share with me. He went on to make his own path in this life and did it well. He was a wonderful human, and this world is now a little dimmer. I imagine he was welcomed into a beautiful reunion on Monday and though he will be missed desperately here on earth he is getting to see and experience everything our souls long for, free of the chains he was bound in over the last 5 years, and in that I rejoice.

Amy, Shannon, and family,

My heart aches for you, and there are no words that can truly express how deeply sorry I am for the loss of your precious son, Matthew. I can only imagine the pain you´re feeling, and I want you to know that you´re not alone in this.

Your love for him was, and always will be, so powerful. That love will live on in every memory, every story, and every beautiful part of him that remains in your heart. Please know that I´m here for you in whatever way you need - whether that´s to talk, to sit in silence, or to help with life´s little things when it all feels too heavy.

You and your family are in my constant thoughts and prayers. May you find moments of peace and strength in the love that surrounds you.

With all my love and sympathy,
Yvette

Amy and Shannon now have an angel watching over them. Matthew will send them signs that only they will understand. Some subtle and some bold. But it will be his way of letting those he loved most know he is okay and watching over them.
