Matthew William Napthen, age 37, of Afton, died at home unexpectedly on Sunday February 19, 2023. The son of Walter Charles Napthen III and Karen Eckmeter, Matthew was born in Mount Clemens on May 22, 1985.
Matthew lived most of his life in Afton/Indian River where he worked for several years as a clerk at the Indian River Trading Post. He enjoyed listening to music, two-tracking, and cooking, with his specialty being tater-tot casserole. Matthew enjoyed walks on the beach and beautiful sunsets but most of all he loved spending time with his niece, Laylah.
Surviving Matthew are his parents, Karen Eckmeter of Afton and Walt Napthen of Sterling Heights; brother, Stephen Napthen and niece, Laylah Napthen, both of Afton; and sister, Karen Horvath of Warren. Matthew also leaves his aunt, Debbie Eckmeter of Vermontville; uncles, Dennis (Gabriele) Eckmeter of Richmond, Bill Eckmeter of Lenox Township, and Clint Eckmeter of Vermontville; as well as many friends.
Matthew was preceded in death by his brother, Wally Napthen, and grandparents, William and Beatrice Eckmeter and Walter and Lorraine Napthen.
A celebration of life is being planned for a later date. Those planning an expression of sympathy please consider a donation in memory of Matthew to his family to help with final expenses. Cremation arrangements were in care of Chagnon Funeral Home.
