Matthew “Matt” Wesley Phillips, 64, passed into glory Friday, September 20, 2024. He was a devoted husband, loving father, and faithful follower of Jesus. In the midst of his own long battle with cancer, he comforted many others walking through their own challenges and was an inspiring example of faith, service, and perseverance.
Matt was hard-working, brilliant, and know for his unfailing sense of humor. A chemical engineer, he loved science, problem solving, and sharing his knowledge and skills with others. He also loved being in God’s creation, whether that was tending his vegetable garden, backpacking in the wilderness, or exploring the stars under a dark night sky.
Matt was an active member of Heartland Community Church for more than 20 years where he served as an elder, small group leader, missions committee chair, on multiple pastoral search committees, and as a mentor to many.
Matt was born November 27, 1959 in Houston, TX to the late Harvey and Nancy Phillips. Survivors include his beloved wife of 42 years, Daphne; daughters, Madeleine and husband, Kevin Friesen, and Gabrielle Phillips; brothers, Gene Phillips and Al and wife Kim Phillips; sister, Cassy and husband Aamer Shaukat; granddaughter, Zoey Mattea Friesen, and many nieces and nephews.
Matt will be greatly missed by all who knew him; Celebration of Life service will be 2:30pm, Saturday, October 19, 2024 at Heartland Community Church. To honor his heart for missions, in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mission to the World (https://mtw.org/projects/details/where-needed-most-1) with a note that your gift is in memory of Matt Phillips.
