Matthew S. Postlethwait, age 65, a resident of Elkins, passed from this life Monday, October 20, 2025, at United Hospital Center in Bridgeport, WV, following a short battle with cancer.
He was born on January 4th,1960 in New Martinsville, WV, a son of the late Lawrence and Garnet Babe Postlethwait. On September 18, 2021, he was married to Brenda Johnson Postlethwait, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Christopher Postlethwait (Brianne Janiszewski) of Wheeling, WV, and Nicholas Postlethwait (Paige Ball) of Dailey, WV, a stepdaughter, Jennifer Daniels of Morgantown, WV, and a stepson, John Daniels III (Jack) of Fairmont, WV.
Also surviving are his three grandchildren, who were the loves of his life, Ellie Postlethwait, Aurora Postlethwait, and Damon Postlethwait, all of Dailey, WV. Matthew grew up with a large family and is survived by one brother, Austin Postlethwait (Marlene) of Moundsville, WV, three sisters, Nancy Neely of Cameron, WV, Shirley Postlethwait of Pittsburgh, PA, and Marilyn Hendershot of New Martinsville, WV, as well as many nieces and nephews who all grew up together and remained close. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Danny Postlethwait and Dave Postlethwait, as well as two sisters, Jackie Postlethwait and Candice Lehman.
Matthew graduated from Magnolia High School, went on to Northern Community College, and graduated from West Liberty State College. After his time at West Liberty, he received his master's from Salem University. He was a well-known educator in Randolph County, having taught English at Coalton School for 2 years and 30+ years at Tygarts Valley Middle/High School where he had a great love for and fond memories of all of his students. He went on to pursue his Administrative degree from Western Governors University and served as Assistant Principal. He also served as the Director of Curriculum & Social Services, retiring from Randolph County Schools with 37+ years of service. Matthew was involved in the Upward Bound Program at Davis & Elkins College for 20 years. He was an adjunct professor for Fairmont State University and Marshall University. He was an avid lover of music and art. Some of his many talents included being a landscape artist, musician, writer, blogger, and chef.
He will be greatly missed by his family and friends, including good friends, Tom Ditty, his coffee/hiking buddies (The Five Dead Heads), and his golden retrievers, Ginger and Arwen.
Matthew's request for cremation was honored. A gathering of family and friends will be held at the Randolph Funeral Home on Saturday, October 25, 2025, from 2pm until 4pm.
