Matthew Santoro Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by John Vincent Scalia Home for Funerals, Inc. on Mar. 6, 2026.
When people said Matthew Santoro was the best of the best, they truly meant it. They broke the mold when they made him.

Matthew Santoro, born May 15, 1941, passed away in his home on March 5, 2026, at the age of 84, surrounded by people he loved.

Matthew proudly served the people of New York City as a Detective with the NYPD for 40 years. Throughout his long and distinguished career, he was known for his dedication, loyalty, sharp mind, and unwavering commitment to justice and service.

Above all else, Matthew was a devoted and loving husband to his beloved wife, Renee. He was a proud and caring father to his children: Dori-Ann, Lisa, Lenny, Matthew, John, Patricia, Crystal, and Farrah. He was also a cherished grandfather and Pop Pop to his eleven grandchildren: Eugene, Alessandra, Daniella, Gina, Kristina, Gianna, Michael, Joseph, Robert, Hayden, and Santino.

Family was the center of Matthew's life. He treasured spending time with those he loved, whether it was going out to breakfast with his closest friends, talking with them on the phone, attending church, or simply enjoying the company of his family. His faith was deeply important to him, and he was a devoted follower and worshiper of God.

Matthew will be remembered for his humor, love, patience, kindness, generosity, and gentle spirit. He was dedicated, strong-willed, with a sense of humor and stubborn streak that only added to his character. Above all, he was a man who loved deeply and gave wholeheartedly to the people in his life.

Matthew leaves behind his loving wife, Renee, his children, grandchildren and many friends whose lives were better for knowing him. His legacy of faith, love, service, and family will live on in all who knew him.

He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

The family will receive friends from 2:00 - 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, and Wednesday, March 11, 2026 at John Vincent Scalia Home for Funerals, Inc., 28 Eltingville Blvd, Staten Island, New York.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 12, 2026 at Holy Child Church located at 4747 Amboy Rd Staten Island, New York 10312. Interment will follow in Moravian Cemetery, Staten Island, NY.

Hi Matty, I went to visit you yesterday and also met your wife and kids. What a great family. Paying my respect turned out to be tough for me. You were a good friend and still are. It was tough saying goodbye to you. But I know you´re in a better place right now. Your family will be fine. I´ll join you when it´s my turn. In the meantime, rest in peace my friend. Zeke

Matty, I´m so surprised to hear that God has called you to him in heaven. A big plus is that you have joined your friends at the 77 Alamo in heaven. I will be there one day soon to join you and talk stories once again. In the meantime you will be missed. You were and will always remain a true friend. My prayers are with you and your family. Rest in peace my friend.
