Matthew Schmierer Obituary

Published by Legacy on Oct. 5, 2023.
Matthew David Schmierer was born in Stockton, CA on July 5, 1980, and entered into eternal life on October 3, 2023. He was a proud and loving son, grandson, father, uncle, fiancé and friend.
Matt had a successful career in the Food Service Industry with accomplishments that included: being the Certified Executive Chef (CEC) at Sun City Roseville, being the youngest CEC ever at Ruth's Chris Steakhouse at the age of 25, being quickly promoted from CEC to Food Service Director at Travis Air Force Base, and holding the Board of Directors Treasurer position for the California Capitol Chef's Association. He had a passion for teaching and was a Culinary Instructor at the Institute of Technology where he taught a wide variety of classes from basic skills to advanced.
Matt attended St. Rose Elementary, Jesuit High School, and the Golden State Culinary Institute. He was a multi-sport athlete during his elementary, junior high and high school years excelling at soccer, basketball, baseball, and football. As an adult he enjoyed going to the driving range with his eldest son and playing on co-ed softball teams. He was a life-long 49ers and SF Giants fan.
Matt found great meaning and purpose in volunteering with youth. He taught culinary classes at a local charter school and coached numerous sports teams which included those of his eldest son, the Junior Giants League, and local flag football teams. His skills as an athlete and passion for teaching made him a great coach. Matt didn't just teach skills; through his own example, he taught sportsmanship, responsibility, and respect. In 2022, Matt was recognized by the Junior Giants as a Willie Mac Award recipient at Oracle Park.
He had a true love for music which he shared with his youngest son. Countless hours were spent together listening to some of their favorites such as the Beatles, the Blues and recently Greta Van Fleet.
Matt loved family get togethers especially around the holidays where he would often be found in the kitchen or at a grill helping others out with whatever was needed. Some of his happiest memories were of the holidays spent at his greatly loved grandparent's home in Lincoln.
Matt's personality was larger than life. His laugh filled a room, his smile brightened hearts, and his hugs warmed the soul. He had endless love to give and gave it freely without reserve. Countless family and friends will carry with them cherished memories and a special place in their hearts for him.
Matt is preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Manuel and Erma Gouvea, and his paternal grandparents Lawrence and Thelma Schmierer. He is survived by: sons Kaleb Matthew Schmierer and Jackson Lee Schmierer, their mother Melissa Morrow-Schmierer; mother Lynn Schmierer, nee Gouvea; father Dave Schmierer (partner Pep, Torie, Spenser); sister Brandi Willard, née Bormuth (husband Brad); nieces Madison, Giavanna, and Vivienne; maternal aunt Janiel Aguiar nee Gouvea; paternal aunt Carolyn Ragsdale nee Schmierer (husband Rick); many cousins on both sides of his family; fiancé Sharon Muha and beloved dog Katie.
A viewing will be held at Lincoln Funeral Home on Friday, October 13, 2023. Friends and family are welcome to join us anytime between 4:00-8:00pm. A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, October 15, 2023, at Timbers at the Lodge, Sun City Roseville from 12:00-4:00pm. I am so sorry to hear of Matt´s passing this is such heartbreaking news. Your family are in my thoughts and prayers. I met Matt this summer with Jr. Giants and he went above and beyond to help us newbies to get through all the hurdles of volunteering and coaching. He was always there to help and assist.
