Matthew R. "Sonny" Zambrano, 95, of Bardonia, NY, passed away on Saturday April 12th, 2025.
Visitation will be held at Sorce Funeral Home - West Nyack on Wednesday April 23rd from 3:00 - 7:00 pm. Funeral service will be held at St. Anthony's Church - Nanuet on Thursday April 24th at 10:00am. Burial will follow at St. Anthony's Cemetery - Nanuet.
Born in Brooklyn, NY to Gaetano (Thomas) and Mary (nee Massa) Zambrano on November 24th, 1929. He attended Boys High School in Brooklyn and graduated in 1936. He served in the U.S. Army with the 2nd Infantry Division during the Korean War, from 1948 - 1951. He was a proud member of the FDNY, starting his career in 1958 with Engine 56, then Squad 6, and finally Ladder 59 (the Tin House) which became Ladder 59 / Engine 43 on Sedgwick Avenue in the Bronx He retired from the FDNY in 1978. Matthew was also a master brick mason, and a true artist with brick and stone. He built buildings throughout Brooklyn, the Bronx, Orange and Rockland County, and was especially proud of his contribution to the 9/11 monument located at Nanuet High School.
Matthew married Frances (nee Guele) on June 28, 1952. They lived in Brooklyn NY with their 3 sons until they moved to Bardonia in 1965. Matt was an avid sports fan, but his favorite team was always the one his grandchild was playing for. He enjoyed playing baseball and bowling, Sunday dinners with his family, and traveling to Florida and the Jersey Shore. Matthew was an active member of the Senior groups at St. Anthony's and St. Francis.
Matthew is survived by his sons, Thomas (Kathy), Frank (Karen) and Matty (Joni), his grandchildren, Nicol (Kory), Thomas (Melinda), Tara (Stephen), Jeanine (John), Matthew (Kayla), Frank (Bridget), John, Michael & Gillian, and 11 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife Frances (2005), parents, Gaetano (1998) and Mary (1982), his brother Thomas (2015).
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation https://t2t.org/ The family wishes to extend special thanks to the staff at Nyack Hospital, Helen Hayes Hospital and Good Samaritan Hospital, whose outstanding care allowed Matthew to live the last few months of his life with respect and dignity.
