Obituary for Mattie Pearl Blackshear November 29, 1937- August 20, 2025 Mattie Pearl Blackshear, born November 29, 1937, in Fitzgerald, Georgia, peacefully passed away on August 20th, 2025. She was the beloved daughter of Florence Evans and Nerrol Blackshear. At 19, Mattie moved to Irvington, NJ, to live with her sister Juliane, later settling in New Brunswick, where she built a life with her family. She worked for many years in the hospitality and health care fields and retired from Rose Mountain Rehabilitation Center in 2002. Mattie had a deep love for travel, from exploring New Jersey and enjoying the excitement of New York City to her favorite trip to Honolulu, Hawaii - a memory she cherished and always hoped to revisit. A woman of faith, Mattie was a longtime member of Ebenezer Baptist Church in New Brunswick, NJ, where she joyfully served on the Pastor's Aide, the Usher Board, and at the soup kitchen. Later, she became a recurrent attendee of North Stelton AME church in Piscataway with her daughter and family. She is predeceased by her son, Timothy Blackshear, her best friend/ sister Edna Bethune, and 12 siblings. She leaves behind two loving children, Linda Belnavis and Gregory Blackshear; four siblings - Clara McCloud, Annie King, Ethel Ree Gaulden, and Quincy Blackshear; two of her favorite cousins, Ollis Douglas and Robert (Sheron) Douglas; and a host of nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind eight grandchildren - Timothy, Nikkia (Marcos), Ambria, Kierra, Nigel (Destiny), Nina, Justin, Gregory; and her three precious great-grandchildren - Amarah, Noah, and Emory. Mattie will be remembered for her strength, her feisty spirit, and the love she poured into her family and friends. Her legacy of faith, love, and family will live on in the many lives she touched. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The family of the late Mattie Pearl Blackshear acknowledge with sincere and heartfelt gratitude, all the gifts, condolences, loving thoughts, time and prayers extended to all of us as we grieve.
