Mattie Lou Broom(e) Bookhart was born on March 14, 1933, in Columbia, South Carolina, the beloved daughter of the late Thomas and Adell Broom(e). She entered eternal rest on Saturday, May 4, 2024, in Columbia, South Carolina.
Mattie was educated in the public school system of Richland County, graduating from C. A. Johnson High School with the class of 1981. Throughout her life she held employment in various roles, but her most coveted positions were serving as the Dietitian Manager for Midlands Center where she retired after 18 years of service and the Foster Grandparent Program where she served as a Foster Grandparent that included hundreds of students in the Richland County School District One School System for 25 years.
Mattie committed her life to Christ at an early age at Zion Pilgrim Baptist Church, Richtex. She was a dedicated member of the Jubilee Choir and the Missionary Board. She enjoyed cooking, growing her plants and gardening, word searches and children as evident of her serving as a Foster Grandparent until her final days.
Mattie was preceded in death by her husband, Matthew Bookhart; son, Westley Smith, Jr; siblings, Richard Broom(e), James Broom(e), Thomas Broom(e), Eckert Thompson, Joseph Boyles, Lillie Pearl Jackson, and Essie Mae Taylor; and granddaughter, Jada Cameron.
Left to cherish her memories are her daughters, Gloria Trapp (Benjamin Brown) and Norma Figgs, both of Columbia, SC; eight grandchildren, Quantra Smith (Frankie Robinson) of Columbia, SC, Melvin Trapp, Shavonda Smith, Tanico (Rodney) Creed, Teon (Brittany) Williams and Nakisha Smith, all of Columbia, SC, Kristy (Robert) Johnson of Blair, SC, and Ebony Smith of Inman, SC; seventeen (17) great grandchildren; six (6) great great-grandchildren; a sister, Sallie Evans of Columbia, SC; brother-in-law, Carnell Jackson of Nashville, TN; two sister cousins (as she affectionately called them), Willie Mae Hatten and Mae Lillie Burke both of Columbia, SC; a devoted companion Otis Trapp of Columbia, SC; and a host of nephews, nieces, other loving relatives, students and dear friends, all of whom will dearly miss her.
