With hearts of sorrow, The Memorial Funeral Home Staff requests your prayers for the family and friends of Mrs. Mattie Jones.
On January 28, 1949, a queen was born. Mattie L. Norton, the eighth of nine children of Elbert Norton and Azzie L. Scott Norton Woods in
Homer, LA.
Every queen has a strong foundation; Mattie's was no different. Throughout her childhood, Mattie attended Union Grove C.M.E Church in
Homer, LA. It is here, where she accepted Jesus into her heart, as her Savior and began her personal walk with Him. Her faith and servant's spirit would be key in the powerful woman she would become.
Her grade school years were spent building more of her firm foundation. Mayfield High School in Claiborne Parish was where her educational foundation and the spark to gain more knowledge took a front seat in her life. Following graduation in 1967, she took her hunger for more to Grambling State University. The fall of her freshman year, 1967, she not only became a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., but also crowned Miss GSU – receiving the physical crown to what everyone always knew was on the inside, a queen.
Years beyond, Mattie moved to Oklahoma City, and began her career in customer service with Greyhound. Her career was not the only thing new in her new city, but she also met then later married Bruce A. Jones in 1969. The two raised their beautiful daughter Simona Nicole, in their nurturing home.
With her beautiful family and career at Lucent Technology (formerly Western Electric Company), her servant's spirit leapt into action. She became actively involved in local politics in 1977-78, doing heavy groundwork to get citizens registered to vote, using her voice to help make changes for the better in the community.
The queen retired and moved back to her hometown of
Homer, LA. She enjoyed cooking, reading and spending time with family and friends. In 1997, her mother's heart drew her back to Oklahoma City to be closer to her beloved daughter and her family.
On April 9, 2023, Queen Mattie L. Norton, a wife, mother, community activist and friend exchanged her earthly crown for her eternal, heavenly crown and robe – her reward for a job well done. She is preceded in death by her parents: Elbert Norton and Azzie Lee Scott Norton-Woods; brothers: Marquette D. Norton, Elmer E. Norton, Robert C. Norton, Louis J. Norton, Gladney O. Norton, and Larry C. Norton.
Remaining the honor and cherish the legacy of their beloved queen mother are her daughter: Simona Nicole Jones Blount; grandchildren: Nicholas Morris and Nina Blount; great- granddaughter: Sophia Morris; her sisters: Elaine L. Norton Miller and Annie T. Norton Altstatt, along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends that loved her dearly.
