Maureen O'Connell Obituary

Published by Legacy on Jan. 2, 2026.
Maureen O'Connell, 90, passed away peacefully in Greater Burlington, VT on November 9, 2024 of conditions incident to aging. She was born in Seattle, March 1934, to Leonore and William P. O'Connell. Maureen grew up on Capitol Hill, where she attended Holy Names Academy, and on Vashon Island, where she and her siblings enjoyed outdoor hobbies, such as sailing, and employment, including raising and selling chickens.

After earning a B.S. in Chemistry at Seattle U., Maureen began her lifelong career in medical research at the University of Washington. Always independent and adventuresome, she was a sports-car driving young woman, active with the Mountaineers, sailing, and traveling widely.

Maureen later followed her medical research team to the University of Vermont where she earned a Master of Statistics degree and spent the rest of her career, excepting a one-year research stint in Switzerland. She was proud to have been a mentor to generations of medical students and young doctors and of having had her name on articles in medical journals.

After retiring, Maureen became an avid gardener and spent many years volunteering as a computer tutor and hospital escort. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, William (Donna) and James O'Connell, and is survived by her siblings, Mary Joan and John (Ann), two nephews, two nieces, and one grandnephew. An interment service will take place at Calvary Cemetery, Seattle, on April 4th at 2 pm.
