Maureen Ida Petersen, age 81 of Cherokee, IA, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Friday, May 17, 2024, at her home in Cherokee, IA. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 31, 2024, at the Meriden Evangelical Free Church in Meriden, IA. Pastor Nelson Jenkins, Pastor Larry Ostercamp, and Pastor Chris McComic will officiate. Burial will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, May 31, 2024, at Oak Hill Cemetery, in Cherokee, IA, prior to the memorial service. There will be no visitation. The Greenwood-Schubert Funeral Home in Cherokee, IA, is assisting the family with arrangements. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.greenwoodfuneral.com.
OBITUARY
Maureen Ida Doornink Petersen (81), a beloved resident of Cherokee, passed away on May 17, 2024, surrounded by her children in her home. She was a devoted mother, always there to offer her unwavering support whenever needed. Maureen was an active and cherished member of the Meriden Evangelical Free Church for nearly 50 years.
Maureen Petersen was born on March 17, 1943, in Sioux Center, IA, to Joe and Edith (VanMarel) Doornink. Her formative years were spent on the family mink farm in Merrill, IA. She graduated from LeMars High School in 1961. On August 14, 1962, she married Larry Petersen of LeMars, IA. The couple explored various cities before settling in Cherokee, IA, where they raised their four children. Maureen dedicated over 25 years of service at several JCPenney stores in the area. Later, she worked at Cherry House and the Work Activity Center in Cherokee as a support staff, retiring to indulge in her passion for knitting, sewing, crafting, and visiting her kids and grandkids as much as possible.
Maureen was preceded in death by her parents, as well as her husband, Larry Petersen (2014), and infant son, Brian Petersen (1965).
She is survived by her children: L. Dale Petersen (Lydia Huber) of Fridley, MN, Blaine Petersen (Cynthia) of Stockton, IL, Sheri Petersen of Shakopee, MN, and Russell Petersen of Cherokee, IA. She also leaves behind grandchildren Christopher Menton, Calvin Petersen, Justice Petersen, and Jolissa Williams; her brother, Jim Doornink; brother-in-law Layten (Pete) Petersen; nephews Brandon Petersen, Travis Petersen, Joseph Doornink; niece Jill Garcia, along with several cousins and numerous treasured friends including Ed and Mackenzie DeLong.
