Maureen Stableford Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Mountcastle Turch Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc. - Dale City on Mar. 17, 2026.
Maureen Stableford was born January 16th 1935 as the eldest child of Maurice and Ann Groat of Melvin, Michigan. She attended nearby Yale High School beginning in 1949 where she was chosen Homecoming Queen in 1951. While at Yale High School she began dating (the Homecoming King) Richard (Dick) Stableford before graduating from Yale in 1953. After graduation she worked as a receptionist/assistant for a local Yale dentist until her marriage in 1956 to recent University of Michigan graduate and now 2nd Lieutenant Dick Stableford, USMC.

This marriage began a 30 year role as the spouse of a Marine Corps officer. Maureen moved with Dick and their growing family to a variety of posts in States such as Alabama, California, Hawaii, Maryland, Virginia and when Dick's duties took him overseas, back home to Michigan. In 1969 after Dick's return from Vietnam they bought their first home in the Darbydale section in Dale City, Virginia. Her lifelong interest in Arts and Crafts lead her to becoming a Charter Member and President of the Dale City Arts and Crafts Club. In addition to Arts and Crafts Maureen participated in a variety of community groups and the occasional bowling league. Once her sons reached High School, Maureen began taking classes at Northern Virginia Community College which prepared her for a variety of positions at the Departments of Army, Commerce and Navy. She retired from government service just prior to she and Dick buying their second home in 2003 in Dumfries Virginia at Four Seasons of Historic Virginia. There she again became an active member in the community in a variety of clubs such as the "Red Hats", Bunco, and Bocce league.

Maureen was predeceased by her parents Mr. & Mrs. Maurice Groat, brother Ronald Groat and son Mark Stableford. She is survived by husband Col. Richard Stableford, USMC (retired), sons Scott and Bryan Stableford, daughter-in-law Ann Marie Victor and grandchildren Seychelle and Sean Stableford as well as a host of nephews and nieces.

A memorial will be held on March 25th from 6-8PM at Mountcastle Funeral Home in Dale City. A private internment will take place on March 26 at Quantico National Cemetery.
