Dr. Maurice Asmussen

Family and friends of Dr. Maurice "Maury" Dwayne Asmussen will gather to pray the Holy Rosary at 6:00 PM on Thursday, October 10, 2024, at Lake Ridge Chapel and Memorial Designers. A Mass celebrating his 72 years of life will follow on Friday, October 11, 2024, at 11:00 AM at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, with a graveside service at Peaceful Gardens Memorial Park Cemetery.
Born on June 24, 1952, in Watertown, South Dakota, to Laurence and Janet Splinter Asmussen, Maurice grew up in Guymon, Oklahoma. As a child, Maurice had severe asthma, which led to frequent hospital visits. These experiences sparked his deep interest in medicine and shaped his commitment to helping others. A gifted student, he excelled in school and went on to pursue higher education at Panhandle State University, eventually earning a master's degree in microbiology and a doctorate in medicine from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center.
Maurice practiced pediatrics in Lubbock for nearly 30 years, where he was known for his wit, sarcastic humor, and profound compassion. For him, being a physician was more than a career-it was a calling. Maurice was deeply engaged in his work, often visiting the hospital lab to examine cultures himself, which reflected his commitment to his patients and to the field of medicine.
Maurice was a man of many layers, each one adding to his unique and special character. His curiosity, humor, and empathy set him apart, leaving behind a multitude of people who will forever cherish the memories and conversations they shared with him.
He is survived by his sons, Brian (Cristi) Asmussen of Dallas, TX, and Mark (Laura) Asmussen of Brenham, TX, along with his eight beloved grandchildren: Kolbe, Reagan, Grant, Thomas, Elizabeth, Cecilia, Lucy, and Andrew. Maurice's love for his family was evident in every conversation and moment spent together. He had a gift for conversation and loved spending time with family, friends, and new acquaintances.
An active member of St. John Neumann Catholic Church, Maurice found strength in his faith and served his community through his involvement with the HUB of the Plains and his support for physicians in recovery. His loyal dogs, Little Bit, Rascal, and Pequeña, were always by his side and enjoyed many gourmet scraps.
Maurice also leaves behind his siblings: Ramona Asmussen Rueschenberg, Gale Asmussen, Kathleen Asmussen Hutchison, and Lisa Asmussen Honeman. He was preceded in death by his parents, Laurence and Janet, and his brother, David Asmussen.
Dr. Maurice Dwayne Asmussen leaves behind a legacy that reflects his love, humor, and spirit of generosity. His devotion to family, patients, and community will be fondly remembered by all who knew him, and his legacy will continue to inspire and uplift those whose lives he touched.
