Mavis Holmes Cronon, age 83, passed away peacefully July 22, 2023 in Fayetteville, North Carolina. She was born June 7, 1940 in Sampson County, NC, to George and Bessie Holmes. Mavis was the second of seven children who grew up with her three brothers and three sisters where they worked with their parents on a small farm.
Mavis was a hard worker and a country girl at heart who enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, and cooking. She traveled overseas and throughout the United States as a wife of a military service member. She worked hard to raise her family while also working with the Red Cross as a volunteer. Once her children were older, Mavis, attended school to become a certified beautician and after graduation she worked as a hairdresser for several years. While living in Tennessee, Mavis used her joy of cooking to work as a cook and waitress in her late husband’s family seafood restaurant. Mavis loved compliments, enjoyed spending time with her customers and was known for being straight forward. Her favorite colors are pink, purple and red.
With our sincerest appreciation to the staff of Village Green Health and Rehabilitation for giving so much of themselves to provide the care and attention our mother needed. We highly appreciate their wisdom, dedication and grace during Mavis’s stay.
Special thanks and appreciation to the wonderful Gentiva Hospice team for their loving care, kindness and compassion during Mavis’s final days.
Mavis is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Laura and Terry Fairchild; son and daughter-in-law, Brian and DeRonda Amberger; son, Barry Sublett; sisters, Wilma Sewell, her dearest sister Linda Cain; five grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Mavis was preceded in death by her parents, George and Bessie Holmes; husband, James Cronon; son, Brantley Amberger; sister, Doris Holmes Jackson; and brothers, Thomas Holmes, Marshall Holmes and Roger Holmes.
She will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts. Friends are invited to attend visitation on Friday, July 28th, 2023, from 11:00 a.m. as well as her celebration of life memorial immediately following, at Pinecrest Funeral and Cremation Services, 4721 Dunrobin Drive, Hope Mills, NC 28348.
