Max E. Hurd
December 31, 1932 - January 2, 2026
Max E. Hurd, age 93, of Council Bluffs, IA, passed away at his home on January 2, 2026. Max was born on December 31, 1932, in Alden, IA to the late Stanton and Irene (Bryan) Hurd. He graduated from Bridgewater High School in 1951 and then worked for the Union Pacific Railroad for 36 years as a computer system designer, retiring in 1987.
Max was an avid dog breeder and showman for 70 years. His "Hurd's Chihuahua Herd" became synonymous with outstanding Chihuahuas! He judged at various dog shows around the country, including the National Specialty Show in New York City. Max helped found the CB Kennel Club and was a Lifetime Member of the Nebraska Kennel Club. He served as National President and 30-year Board Member of the Chihuahua Club of America. Max earned respect in the "Dog World" as a breeder, judge, mentor, and friend with a smile for everyone.
In addition to his parents, Max was preceded in death by his wives, D. Marie Hurd in 1982, Geraldine Hurd in 2007; sisters, Marie Newberry, and Geraldine Blankenship; 2 brothers, Richard and Donald Hurd. Max is survived by his sons, Eric (Casey) Williams, M.D. of Lincoln, NE, Mark (Susan Tatum) Williams of Loveland, CO; daughter, LeAnn (Dr. Wayne, PhD) Brasure of Albuquerque, N.M.; 6 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren; niece, Marilyn (Richard) Raasch of Omaha, NE; other nieces and nephews and many friends.
Funeral service, Friday, January 9, 2026, 11:00 a.m. at Salem United Methodist Church, 14955 Somerset Ave, CB, IA 51503 where he was a longtime member. A lunch will immediately follow in the fellowship Hall. Interment will follow at 2:30 p.m. in the Massena, IA Cemetery. Visitation with the family one hour prior to the service on Friday at the church. The funeral will be live streamed on the Salem UMC Facebook page. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions are suggested to Salem UMC, Lauritzen Gardens, or Metro Area Youth Foundation.
