Max Thomas, 60, of Springfield, Missouri, passed away leaving behind a legacy of curiosity, wit, and adventure. He is survived by his wife, Lark; his son, Andrew (Alex); his beloved grandchildren, Waylon and Alaska. Additionally, he leaves his mother, Helen, sister Gina Davis and family, and brother, Van Thomas and Family.
Max was a devoted father and grandfather. He was the kind of man who would rescue an owl with his fire gloves one day, and the next, play a fiercely competitive game of Spades. He was smart, quirky, and passionate, with a mind that never stopped wondering and a heart that beat strongest for his family. He was sharp, curious, and always ready with a clever remark or unexpected insight.
He found joy in the stillness of the woods and awe in the night sky. Stargazing wasn't just a hobby; it was a way of connecting with something vast and beautiful. In retirement, Max explored the country's natural wonders, traveling to Yellowstone, the Grand Tetons, and the coast of Maine. He respected nature deeply and felt most at home under a canopy of trees or a blanket of stars.
Max was unwavering in his devotion to his family, showing up in ways that mattered most. Max will be deeply missed. His legacy lives on in the stories he told, the trails he walked, and the family who will carry his spirit forward with their eyes gazing into the stars. Max leaves behind a family who adored him, a garage full of camping gear, and a sky full of stars that will never look quite the same.
A Celebration of Life for Max will be held October 18, 2025 at 11:00 AM at Greenlawn Funeral Home East, Springfield, Missouri.
In lieu of flowers, one of Max's favorite charities was Castaway Animals Rescue Effort at 1328A W Sunshine St., Springfield, MO 65807. His traveling companion, Sadie, was adopted from this center.
For Max's love of the Kansas City Chiefs the family has requested you wear your Chiefs attire to the Celebration of Life.

Max was truly one of a kind. He was my mentor when I was just starting out in the insurance industry. Even after we both left the company, we remained in contact sending yearly Christmas cards. He will be missed by many.

Max was a great guy and good friend. He was my western Arkansas manager for United Health Care and got things done for me (and others) that no one before has ever been able to do. He visited me at my cabin in Eureka Springs where he showed how much he loved to be in nature and in the woods. He will be missed by me and all that knew him. I hate that he is gone.

I am sorry to hear about this tradegy. I have not seen him in years. I used to work with him while he was at Blue Cross Blue Shield in Springfield. Prayers for Lark, Alex, and entire family. Ken Stephens
