Maxine Snider DeVore, 77, of Louisville, Kentucky, died peacefully in her sleep on January 23, 2026.
Maxine exemplified work/life balance and community building. She spent her career as a secretary, for Sullivan University in Louisville, KY and then for the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, FL. She grew up in church—singing in the choir, playing handbells, and volunteering wherever extra hands were needed. Max was a lifelong learner and a creative soul, with a passion for quilting. She and her Friends N’ Stiches friends made countless charity quilts and walker buddies for those in need throughout the community. During the pandemic, she took a break from quilting to make masks that helped keep people safe.
Maxine loved life. She loved to travel. She loved nature – whether walking a beach or tending her beautiful garden. And she loved cheering on her beloved Louisville Cardinals and Jacksonville Jaguars, especially with friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John Snider and Hazel Driskell Snider; her sisters, Charlotte Hair, Glenda Casper, June Zwald, and Marilyn Henderman; her husband of nearly 50 years, William E. DeVore, and her daughter, Kelly Lynn DeVore. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Cheri DeVore Baize (Jonathan); her grandchildren, William Truman, Benjamin Jackson, Kelly Carter, & Eden Elizabeth, whom she loved beyond measure; and so many friends and family that were dear to her heart.
There will be a public visitation on Friday, February 6, from 4-8 pm at Newcomer Funeral Home, 235 Juneau Drive, 40243 and on Saturday, February 7, from 10am-12pm at The Chapel in the Woods, 1407 Moser Road, 40299. Her Memorial Service will be held at noon Saturday, February 7 at The Chapel in the Woods.
Expressions of sympathy may be made to your community. Volunteer at your church or a public school in your neighborhood, plant a tree for the next generation, teach someone a new skill, visit a nursing home resident, help stock your local food pantry, or adopt a family who is new to the community. Tangible gifts may be made to the KY Humane Society, the YMCA of Greater Louisville, or the S.T.I.T.C.H. ministry at Highland Presbyterian Church.
To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.
