Doug, this is your California cousin, Terrie Herrick. My brother Richard found the online obituaries today for your mother (and Aunt Loretta). I remember how close you and your mother always were and we are so sorry for your loss.

Your mother was one of the dearest, funniest, most memorable people we ever knew. She was a party all by herself. I cherish the time I spent with her. We all did.

I think the first time we went to visit your parents in Decatur was in 1970 when I was almost 14. Aunt Maxine spent a lot of time with me watching the summer storm, which I found fascinating, and introduced me to her romance novels (Emilie Loring is one of the authors she liked back then). Of course, she made the most divine lemon pie.

During her 1977 visit to us in Orange County, we went to Knott's Berry Farm where there was a roller coaster ride with vehicles like motorcycles. The ride, which she insisted we go on repeatedly, made both our mothers laugh harder than I'd ever seen them laugh and wet their pants. That was before Depends!

That summer I bought Groucho Marx glasses with the oversized nose and moustache attached and we (meaning both our mothers, my sister Donna and I) wore them to Dodger Stadium. We had really good field box seats along the third base line and your mom got a big kick out of the fact that several of the ballplayers saw us, pointed and laughed.

Just thinking about your mother makes me smile and I will never forget her. You were blessed to have her for so long and I hope your memories are the happiest kind.

Love,

Terrie, Richard and Chris Herrick

Doug ~ What can I say that hasn't already been said? You know how much Maxine meant to me and her passing is a profound loss. However, I remember all the good times we've had together and she will always be in my heart. I will never forget her and find comfort now that she has gone on to be with her family. I guess God wanted her with him! It's a tribute to her sweet spirit and brave and generous heart. We will miss her so much. YOU are also in our hearts, thoughts and prayers.

Aunt Maxine always put everyone in high spirits when we were together. She was always a part of our lives from the on going cook off events that she enjoyed so much. My sister Connie always kept us posted on Maxine's travels. She enjoyed life, and the people around her. We're going to miss her.

I don't recall ever being in the same room with Her that everyone in the room wasn't laughing, smiling, and having fun.
She will be missed.
