Maxine Gloria Lawrence passed away peacefully on January 8, 2026, with her immediately family by her side. Maxine was the first of three daughters born to George Peters and Franka Monsalvatge Peters on June 28, 1946, in New York City. Along with her sisters, Marjorie and Ruby, she was raised in East Harlem. Maxine graduated from Mable Dean Bacon High School in 1966 and went on to pursue a career in cosmetology and healthcare.
Maxine married Theodore "Teddy" Lawrence from Detroit, Michigan. Together, they raised three daughters-Jenice, Torrae, and Tashana in Peekskill, New York. As a proud mother, she enjoyed guiding them through their post-graduate education and watching them bloom into professional career women.
At the heart of Maxine's life was family. She was part of a large, close-knit family…which was a quilt; stitched together by aunts, uncles, and cousins throughout New York and the Bahamas. Her sisters and many cousins provided a lifelong source of love, friendship, and togetherness. One cousin, particularly Teddy Adams, was her brother in spirit, confidant, and protector. Through Teddy came his wife, Emma, and his sister, Roslyn and husband Eddie. Together, the five formed a tightly bonded section of the quilt in
Palm Coast, Florida that helped hold the family together for generations to come. Family reunions, summer cookouts, hurricane storm parties and holiday gatherings further strengthened those ties.
Maxine's quilt was further expanded with the arrival of her three grandchildren-Michael, Janysa, and Tyler. One nephew, Christian and one grandniece Christaline and one grandnephew, Chase-each of whom brought her profound joy.
Maxine was a spark-a five-foot-two fireball of strength whose resilience was tested time again. Many knew she was heroic in beating breast cancer in 2022. Fewer may know she survived Hurricane Andrew in 1992 after relocating to Miami, Florida from New York. Years later she survived a massive tornado in Winter Garden, Florida in 1999 after relocating from Miami. Maxine once again refused to be defined or defeated by any adversity.
Adding to her quilt-this time through cherished friendships and a loving church family at Mt. Calvary in
Palm Coast, Florida, this new community became an integral part of her life.
Maxine has created several important milestones in her life. However, those facts alone cannot capture the depth of what she meant to so many or the essence of who she truly was. Maxine was a God-fearing Christian; over the years she opened her home to many in need. With her infectious beautiful smile, Maxine loved to dance, sing, laugh and make friends wherever she walked.
Maxine leaves behind a beautiful quilt she so carefully and lovingly pieced together: three daughters, three grandchildren, two sisters, nieces, nephews, many cousins and wonderful friends, all bound by her strength, love, and enduring spirit.
Friends and family may send condolences and donations to The Lawrence Family, 69 Franciscan Lane,
Palm Coast, FL. 32137. In lieu of flowers, an ego-friendly memorial tree donation can be made through Lohman Funeral Home of Palm Coast.
