Maylene Campbell, a devoted mother, grandmother, niece, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 1, 2025, at the age of 87. Maylene was known for her unwavering love and support for her family and those around her. Maylene loved shopping, going to garage sales, traveling, and most of all gardening; she had "the green thumb." Maylene was beautiful inside and out, she'll be missed by all who knew her.
On January 27, 1938, in Guys, Tennessee, Versye Avery and Pink Robinson were blessed with a beautiful baby girl whom they named Maylene. Maylene was raised on her family farm where they produced a variety of crops; this is where she developed her "green thumb." Maylene attended and graduated from McNairy High School in Guys, Tennessee. She participated in the school women basketball team during this time. This is also where she met the love of her life, Joseph Campbell. The two later married, from this union the beginning of their legacy was created their children: Shari A., Joseph A., Janis O., Darryl E., and Versi D.
Maylene and her family were part of what is known as "The Great Migration", relocating from the "Jim Crow" South to Kalamazoo, Michigan. Maylene began her career in the automotive industry at Checker Motors. She was the first woman "die setter." She took great pride in this. Maylene was a devoted member of Galilee Missionary Baptist Church, where she served on their hospitality board.
Maylene was preceded in death by her love, Joseph P., two daughters, Shari and Janis, and two sons, Joseph A. and Darryl E. Both of her parents, her brothers, Eddie, Troy, and one sister, Eunice. Paternal and maternal grandparents, uncles A.C., Al, Ed, and her Aunt Vert. She leaves to cherish her memory, her daughter Versi (Charles)Hines, Grandchildren Chy'lon (Beonka) Weems-Hines, Calvin Campbell, Joseph R. Hines, Kareen Thomas, Erika Campbell, Tasha Jolley. Great Grandchildren: Kartaysha, Calvin, Tavin, Khari, A'zariah, Ramiyah, Leah, Akira, and Tamir. Great-Great Grandchildren: Kamyl, Knoelle, Knazir, and Khalil. Her beloved Aunt Lois, her brothers James, Robert, Roy, and her sister Sheila. A host of close family and friends.
"Your life was a blessing, your memory a treasure. You are loved beyond words and missed beyond measure." How lucky we are to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.
