Maynard Heins Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Newcomer Funeral Home - Monroe on Feb. 26, 2026.
Maynard F. Heins

Age 79 of Monroe died at his home in Monroe on Wednesday, Feb. 25. Maynard was born on April 13, 1946 in Dodgeville to Francis and Helen (Buss) Heins. He graduated from Mineral Point High School in 1964 and received his M.S. and B.S. from UW-Platteville. Maynard married Jonna C. Leatherman in 1968 at Lancaster United Methodist Church.

Maynard served in the Army from 1971-1974 based out of San Antonio, Texas. In that time, he played in the 5th Army Band for two presidential funerals – Harry S. Truman and Lyndon B. Johnson. His love of music continued after the Army, where he taught music for 30-plus years at the Monroe Middle School, was a member of the Heins Brothers dance band, was a church musician for over 60 years at various churches, and directed the Monroe Community Chorus. While teaching, he earned the Kohl Teacher of the Year award. Maynard and Jonna were heavily involved in Cheese Days, serving on various committees and earning the titles of King and Queen in 1992. In addition to his extra curricular activities, Maynard enjoyed cross stitching, crossword puzzles, playing cards and playing the role of husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Maynard is survived by his wife of 57 years, Jonna; his children Tracy (Brian) Dillon, Noel (Gerry) Herbst and Lane (Lana) Heins all of Monroe; seven grandchildren, Natalie, Jared, Taylor, Peyton, Jordan, Ava and Allison; one great-grandchild, Drew; his sister, Ruth (Kenny) Johnson of Mineral Point; and sister-in-law, Sonja Van Dusseldorf of Pella, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents, Francis and Helen; mother- and father-in-law, Myrtle and Wilbur Leatherman; sister-in-law, Linda Heidi Holmes; and brother-in-law Arlan Van Dusseldorf.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 2, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., at Grace Lutheran Church, Monroe, with Pastor John Tabaka officiating. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Monroe, followed by a luncheon at Turner Hall. Visitation will be at the Newcomer Funeral Home, Monroe, on Sunday, March 1, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and at the church on Monday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
