Maynard Davis Moore, known affectionately as Grandpie to his grandchildren, was friendly and tried to invoke laughter with his "dad jokes" in every life he touched. Born on September 13, 1948, in Wilmington, Delaware, Maynard lived a life full of "wicked good" food. He grew up in Maine and departed this world on November 9, 2025, in Springfield, Missouri, on his way home from church.
Maynard's early academic talent was evident when he graduated as the valedictorian from Cherryfield/Harrington High School in 1966. His thirst for knowledge led him to Lowell Technological Institute, where he studied to become a physicist chemist. While attending the institute, he was saved while listening to short wave radio in his dorm room and by reading the gospel of John. After being saved, he transferred to New Brunswick Bible Institute in Canada, where he cultivated his enduring faith - a faith that remained a guiding force throughout his life, and met the love of his life, Jodie. Maynard's educational journey finished at Baptist Bible College, where he earned a degree in theology in 1971.
For over two decades, Maynard's hardworking and diligent nature was manifested through his dedication to Reyco Industries. He enjoyed life on the road, which was evident in his role as a chauffeur for BNSF Railroad Company and as a bus driver for Springfield R-12 school district. Maynard's entrepreneurial spirit shone as he owned and operated his tax business - an accomplishment that garnered him a feature in The Marquis Who's Who in America for his professional integrity and significant contributions to society.
When not immersed in his varied professional endeavors, Maynard's Christian faith was a source of both comfort and guidance. He served the Lord with the same enthusiasm that he approached every aspect of life, often saying, "To know God and to have a relationship with Him, is the only way to have true peace." This was amongst one of the last things he said to his Sunday School class the day he passed.
A man of many interests, Maynard was often seen enjoying music, movies, and Jeopardy! with his beloved wife, children, and grandchildren. He was always down to dance to good music, which probably came from his youth years when he used to spin tunes as a DJ. His infectious, loud laugh was a soundtrack to many gatherings, where his intelligent and funny storytelling was a highlight. Maynard often reminded us of the power of humor with his kindness and intelligent wit. He was known to warn others "Don't take any wooden nickels." and "That will cost you a buck two ninety eight." Maynard was an adventurer at heart, often willing to try new things. At one point in his life, you could find him on a motorcycle, as he enjoyed being a part of the Christian Motorcyclist Association. He also enjoyed collecting rare stamps and coins.
Maynard's legacy is cherished by his loving family: his wife, Joanne Moore (aka Jodie), who walked alongside him through life's journey for 56 years; his one and only sibling, his sister Roberta (John) Golden. His children: David Moore, Heidi (Roy Sr.) Hardy, and Angel Gerken-Galligher (Levi). His adored grandchildren, Deidre Hardy, Roy (Morgan) Hardy Jr., Asia Gerken, Vaj (Lisseth) Gerken, Braedyn Moore, and Peyton Moore; along with his great-granddaughter, Rogan Hardy. He also had three nieces, Erin, Seana, and Kathleen. He is preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Yvonne Moore.
A celebration of life will be held at Crossway Baptist Church, where he was a proud member. All are welcome for a come and go event Tuesday, November 25, from 4:00 to 6:00pm, with family and friends sharing stories around 4:30pm.
Maynard wouldn't have it any other way if food wasn't being served, so expect light refreshments.
