Mearl Wayne Bagwell, a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on Sunday, November 9, 2025, at the age of 86 in Groves, Texas. Born on March 28, 1939, in Borger, Texas, Mearl lived a life dedicated to service, family, and the pursuit of happiness.
Mearl had a distinguished career that showcased his diverse talents and unwavering dedication. He served proudly in the Navy, where he began to cultivate the strong work ethic and sense of responsibility that would define his professional life. Following his military service, he transitioned into law enforcement, spending five years as a Police Officer in Port Aransas and working as a Corrections Officer at the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. In addition to these roles. he utilized his skills as a crane operator.
Educationally, Mearl earned a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice, demonstrating his commitment to understanding the complexities of law and order. He was also known throughout his life as a self-made mechanic, possessing the unique ability to fix anything that crossed his path—a skill that endeared him to many and brought comfort to his family.
Mearl was an individual who embraced life with humor and joy. He cherished making others laugh and took great comfort in his daily routine of reading the Bible. His interests were varied, including woodworking, building model houses, and nurturing a passion for model trains. In his younger years, he enjoyed bird hunting, which provided him with cherished memories.
Mearl is survived by his loving wife of 11 years, Oretha Bagwell of Stinett, Texas. He also leaves behind his son, Chad Bagwell of Groves, and his stepdaughters, Renee and her husband, Morris, and Tonya. His legacy continues through his grandchildren, Aron Bagwell and Rebecca Bagwell, who will carry forth his spirit.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Moses and Effie Bagwell, and his siblings, Everett Bagwell and Viola Bagwell.
Mearl's memory will live on in the hearts of his family and friends, reflecting the kindness, laughter, and love he shared throughout his life. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege to know him.
