Megan Danielle Hays, age 39 of Salem, IL passed away suddenly on Wednesday, August 13, 2025.

Megan was born on March 30, 1986, in Mt. Vernon, Illinois, the daughter of Rick Wayne and Janis (Sauerwein) Hays.

Survivors include her mother, Janis Hays of Belleville; daughter, Sylvey Helm of Salem; brother, Dane Hays of Salem; grandmother, Joann Sauerwein; uncles and aunts, Steve Sauerwein and wife Carol, Bill Sauerwein and wife Carla, Mark Sauerwein and wife Linda, Marilyn Smith and Marion Hays; along with many cousins and close friends.

She was preceded in death by her father, Rick Hays, grandparents, Elmer Dean ("Ed") Sauerwein, Mildred Deaver and Wayne Hays.

Megan's greatest joy was spending time with her daughter and her mom, often curled up together for cozy movie nights. Her brother, Dane, was a big part of her life and often joined in their time together. While Megan's dad passed at an early age for her, he had a huge influence on her life also. A passionate reader, Megan could often be found with a book in hand. More recently, she discovered a natural talent for cooking. Her boundless love for animals meant no stray ever went unnoticed or uncared for. Megan loved deeply-most of all, she loved her daughter, Sylvey. Guiding her, cheering her on, and reminding her that she could do hard things was Megan's life's purpose. Her love for Sylvey was truly beyond measure.

Megan was a 2004 graduate of Salem Community High School and attended college at Kaskaskia College. She worked at various businesses in the community.

A Celebration of Life for Megan Danielle Hays will be held from 4-6pm on Tuesday, August 19th at Jaycee Park/Sprehe Fields in Centralia, IL. Memorial contributions can be made to her daughter, Sylvey, with checks made payable to Janis Hays. Crouse Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. I only knew Megan from working at dollar general together. From that short amount of time, I could tell she was so smart, funny, kind, and loved her family. Im sorry to hear she is lost to this world. May she have peace and rest.
