When I first met you in Clinton il I was overwhelmed with what a kind and gentle giant you were. Never did you act better than anyone else, or make anyone feel unwelcome. We had many great days sitting back talking basketball, and laughing the night away. You were and always will be one of my favorite friends ever and I miss you and will continue to miss you til I pass. May you rest in peace and I pray you are looking down on me and smiling, as I look up hoping you will be there to meet me one day. I love you bro. Your friend "2-tall"

I met Mel when he was working as a security guard in Central Illinois in the 90s. He was such a nice man - very easy to talk with. It was just so surreal to be around someone that had played at such a high level for a program like Kentucky and in the pros. I was grateful for the opportunity to talk sports (including the classic Illinois/KY snow game in CHampaign in 1983?) with such a nice and kind man. RIP, Melvin

I grew up in a house that was ALL UK! My dad bled blue, so it meant we ALL did! He loved each and every player, and I did too. We both loved to watch him play.If my dad were here today he would be saddened,as I am saddened, to see such a young, and wonderful human being be taken so soon.On behalf of my beloved father, and speaking for myself,Mel Turpin, you will always be in our hearts, and in the hearts of many! You are free now and knowing that you are at peace is a comfort. God Bless your family that you left behind.I know that they are so proud of you,as we all are!

I grew up in Fork Union, VA where my father was Athletic Director at Fork Union Military Academy for nearly 40 years. I remember the winter of 1980, watching the FUMA Holiday Invitational Basketball Tournament that was a 2-night tournament featuring the BEST prep schools around. I was 12 years old at the time, and will never forget the unbelievable show that Mel and the FUMA team put on out on the court that night. I was in awe, and specifically remember a reverse dunk that Mel threw down which sent the FUMA cadets into a frenzy.

I'm sure there are countless memories each of us share of Mel the player and Mel the person -- and Mel the father -- and I can only imagine what a loss his family and closest friends must feel, as I, too, feel deeply saddened by the passing of this true legend and truly loved human being.

Rest in peace, big "Turp."

My deepest sympathy to the entire family -- especially to Kiel and the children,

I like to send my prayer to the Turpin family. I grew up on Douglas Ave in West end. And alway proud that our community produced a man like Melvin. I was way younger than Melvin, but looked up to him as a kid hoping that I would have a chance to succeed like him. You gave kids like me a neighborhood role model.. So even in tragic death I would like to thank you for your positive influences you had on me as a kid, and our community. May God bless you and your family.

Turpin Famliy...

May God bless you all, today, and always. My Wildcat Heart is breaking for all of you. My first game at Rupp was in the 80's when Melvin played, I was 11. I remember walking around UK campus trying to spot players, I was lucky to meet Sam and Melvin in the same day...it was like the lotto for 11 year old KY fans! Melvin was loved by Wildcat fans everywhere, his memory and legacy will live in our hearts forever.
