Melba Larson Obituary

Melba Dykes Larson, age 93, passed away peacefully on February 13, 2026. Born on October 4, 1932, in Bonifay, she was the daughter of Claude Dykes and Birdie Davidson.

Melba was the devoted wife of the late Norman Larson, to whom she was married for 62 wonderful years until his passing in 2013. As the wife of a retired military serviceman, she faithfully supported her husband through numerous duty stations and postings around the world, embracing each new community and adventure with grace and resilience.

A loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Melba's greatest joy was her family. She cherished time spent with her children, grandchildren, and the many generations that followed. Her kitchen was often the heart of family gatherings, and she will always be remembered for her famous chicken fricassee recipe, lovingly prepared and shared. In quieter moments, she enjoyed doodling and creating small pieces of art that reflected her gentle and creative spirit.

Melba dedicated many years of service to others through her work as a Licensed Practical Nurse. She retired from Twin Cities Hospital, where she worked in the pharmacy and cared diligently for patients and colleagues alike.

Her faith was the cornerstone of her life. A longtime and active member of First Baptist Church, Melba was deeply involved in church activities and mission work. She was also a proud Lioness with the Lions Club International and enjoyed her participation in the Civic Club Follies, contributing enthusiastically to her community.

She is survived by her three children: John and his wife Mary Ellen Larson; Rebecca and her husband Roger Gauthier; and Richard and his wife Asalee Larson. She also leaves behind 10 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and 7 great-great-grandchildren, all of whom brought immense pride and joy to her life.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Norman Larson; her sister, Billie Pate; and her stepmother, Minnie Dykes.

A funeral service will be held at 12:00 p.m. (noon) in the chapel of Emerald Coast Funeral Home. The family will receive friends for visitation one hour prior to the service. A private graveside service will take place at Barrancas National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Melba's memory to the First Baptist Church Fort Walton Beach Mission Fund.

The family wishes to thank the caring and compassionate staff of Emerald Coast Hospice.
