Jacksonville - Melba Jane Stocker, 75, of Jacksonville, Illinois, and formerly of Arenzville and Carthage, died Friday, December 5, 2025, at her home.
She was born on June 11, 1950, in Jacksonville, the daughter of Martin and Mary (Wilson) Joeckel.
She is survived by her niece, Christina (Bill) Hannah of Lawrenceville, GA; great niece, Sophia; and sister, Marilee (James) Crawley-Mertins of Ames, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Marlene Brewer.
Melba graduated from Triopia High School and MacMurray College with a master's degree. She was a vocal and instrumental music teacher, activity therapist, and certified special education and K-12 teacher. She worked at Meline Nursing Center, Griggsville Community School, Pathway School in Carthage, McFarland and at the Jacksonville Developmental Center. In addition, Melba taught private piano and guitar lessons. She directed several children's, youth and adult choirs in Griggsville, Little York, and Jacksonville.
Melba was also a talented soloist, pianist, and organist at First Congressional Church, Bethel Church, and several other churches. She brought humor and joy to all that knew her through her jovial spirit and gift of music. She loved collecting seashells, Christmas ornaments, antiques and antique books. Melba loved her cat, Tucker. Melba's family is extremely grateful for the support, care, and love that her dear friend, Tammy Pitchford and her family, have given Melba through many years.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. December 20, 2025 at the Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home in Jacksonville. The family will meet friends and family from 10 a.m. until time of service. Burial will follow at Arenzville North Cemetery. The Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home in Jacksonville is in charge of the arrangements. Condolences may be left at buchanancody.com.
