Obituary published on Legacy.com by Koenig-Belvill Funeral Home & Cremations - La Grange on Nov. 7, 2024.
Melvin Earl Austin of La Grange, known affectionately as Mel to his friends and family, passed away suddenly on November 6, 2024, at the age of 87, in Austin, Texas, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on July 10, 1937, in Fort Worth, Texas, Mel was a beacon of love and kindness throughout his life, touching the hearts of all who knew him.
Mel's journey began in Fort Worth, but his story would take him to many places, shaping the lives of countless individuals along the way. After earning a business degree from North Texas State, Mel proudly served his country in the Navy Reserve, an experience that instilled in him a deep sense of duty and service. His professional life was marked by his dedication as a District Manager in Conroe and later as a County Manager in La Grange for Texas Farm Bureau. Mel's work ethic and leadership were an inspiration to his colleagues and those he served in the community.
Beyond his professional achievements, Mel was a pillar of faith in La Grange. He devoted many years to teaching Sunday School at the First Baptist Church and leading Community Bible Study. His commitment to his faith was evident in his everyday actions and the wisdom he imparted to his family and friends.
Mel's love for his family was the cornerstone of his life. He is survived by his beloved wife, Carol Austin of La Grange; his daughter, Susan Austin Pylant, and son-in-law, Tim Pylant, both of La Grange; his brother, Wayne Austin of Dallas; grandchildren, Austin and Sarah Pylant and Alexandria (Pylant) and Rex Laird; and four (soon to be six) great-grandchildren. Each family member was a testament to Mel's loving nature, and they carry forward his legacy of kindness and warmth.
Mel took great pride in keeping his property and church grounds meticulously mowed and well-maintained. His love of a beautiful yard was matched only by his love for his community, where he was always ready with a friendly smile and a helping hand.
Those who knew Mel would describe him as loving and kind and a man who made friends easily. Mel's presence was a comfort and a joy to those around him, and his absence will be deeply felt by all.
Mel's life was a testament to the power of love, service, and faith. He was a man who built a life not just for himself but for all those he encountered. His legacy is one of unwavering kindness, steadfast dedication to God and family, and an enduring spirit of community.
As we say goodbye, we celebrate a life well-lived and a man well-loved. His memory will continue to inspire and guide us, just as his life was a beacon of hope and friendship. Mel's journey on earth has ended, but his story will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 14, 2024 at First Baptist Church La Grange. Charitable contributions can be made to First Baptist Church Building Fund, AMEN, or the
